Removing and installing input gear Note gearbox identification → Chapter.

Special tools and workshop equipment required

t	Pressure plate -VW 402-

t	Press tool -VW 407-

t	Multi-purpose tool -VW 771-

t	Thrust plate -30 - 205-

t	Drift sleeve -40 - 21-

t	Thrust plate -40 - 105-

t	Taper roller bearing puller -V.A.G 1582-

t	Grip -V.A.G 1582/3-

t	Torque wrench -V.A.G 1576-

Drive shaft and differential do not need to be removed.

1 -	Socket head fastener, 250 Nm

q	Engaging parking lock to remove or install.

q	Using 22 mm socket.

q	Before installing socket head fastener insert axial needle bearing ( → Item).

2 -	Dished washer

q	Inserting with curved side facing socket head fastener.

3 -

Shim

q	Determining thickness → Chapter „Adjusting input gear“.

4 -	Taper roller bearing inner race

q	After measuring shim, place it on input gear with locking fluid -AMV 185 101 A1-.

5 -	Taper roller bearing outer race

q	Driving out using drift.

q	Driving in with -30 - 205-.

q	Inserting with locking fluid -AMV 185 101 A1-.

6 -	Gearbox housing

7 -	Axial needle bearing

q	Installing with flat side facing input gear.

q	Inserting into input gear before installing socket head fastener → Item.

8 -	Taper roller bearing outer race

q	Driving out with drift.

q	Driving in with -30 - 205-.

q	Inserting with locking fluid -AMV 185 101 A1-.

9 -	Taper roller bearing inner race

q	Pulling off → Fig..

q	Pressing on → Fig..

q	Inserting with locking fluid -AMV 185 101 A1-.

10 -	Input gear

q	With impulse wheel for road speed sender -G68-.

q	Number of teeth → Chapter.

q	Adjusting → Chapter.

q	If signs of damage exist, always renew input gear and output gear together.

q	Removing → Fig..

q	If input gear is renewed, adjust planet carrier → Chapter.

Pulling off taper roller bearing inner race –  Place thrust plate -40 - 105- on input gear.

Pressing on taper roller bearing inner race A pressure piece must be placed below the hub of the input gear to avoid damaging the input gear.

Inserting taper roller bearing inner race –  Insert taper roller bearing inner race with -AMV 185 101 A1-.

Removing input gear –  Insert socket head fastener without dished washer, shim and axial needle bearing far enough for a gap size -a- = 3 mm to exist between socket head fastener and taper roller bearing inner race. –  Drive out input gear with -VW 771- as far as the taper roller bearing inner race. –  Remove -VW 771- and take out input gear.
