Removing and installing propshaft
Removing and installing propshaft
A twin pillar lifting platform should be used when working on the propshaft.
t  Before removing, mark positions of all parts in relation to each other. Reinstall in the same position otherwise imbalance will be excessive, the mountings could be damaged causing rumbling noises.

t  Do not unscrew propshaft on one end and do not let it hang down, otherwise centring sleeves -arrow- will be irreparably damaged. Tie up parts if necessary.
t  Keep propshaft straight; store and transport fully extended only.
–  Release parking brake, move selector lever to “N” position.
  V39-1366
–  Mark position of front and rear propshaft between output flange oil seal and flexible coupling flange of rear viscous coupling -arrows- (illustration shows connection of both propshaft tubes).

Remove rear propshaft tube →
Removing front propshaft tube
  N39-0310
–  Unbolt front propshaft from bevel box.
–  Remove front/rear propshaft tube connecting bolts.
  N39-0311
–  Rotate propshaft until notch in flange is downwards.
–  Remove one securing bolt from centre bearing and loosen second bolt -arrows- in order to remove front propshaft tube.
If only front propshaft tube is to be removed, screw in bolts for centre bearing to secure rear propshaft tube from dropping.
Remove rear propshaft tube
  N39-0312
–  Unscrew propshaft from viscous coupling.
The three fillings in the groove line up with the tapped hole for attaching the propshaft -arrows-.
–  Remove front/rear propshaft tube connecting bolts.
–  Remove centre bearing securing bolts and remove rear propshaft tube.
If only rear propshaft tube is to be removed, secure front propshaft tube from dropping.
Installing
Install propshaft parts in reverse order of removal.
  N39-0408
t  Do not damage centring pin oil seal -arrow- in front or rear propshaft during installation. Do not cant propshaft, push horizontally onto appropriate guide pin. If damage occurs, the respective propshaft tube must be renewed.
t  After installation of the propshaft, the distance between the propshaft and the steering box must be measured and adjusted if necessary → Chapter.
t  Grease centring pin oil seal -arrow- before installing.
Markings of propshaft tubes
  V39-1366
t  Propshaft tubes are marked with a spot of white or green paint in the flanges.
–  When bolting propshaft tubes together, line up spots of paint, dot to dot.
–  If flanges of propshaft tubes are to be removed, first transfer spots of paint to tube.
This will ensure that imbalance present will be kept to a minimum in the entire propshaft.
Installing centre bearing free of stress
–  Align centre bearing in its elongated holes so that propshaft is under stress.
–  Do not tighten centre bearing bolts to body until after propshaft has been installed.
  N39-0359
The centre bearing is installed free of stress if the sealing lips -arrows- on both sides of mounting have the same overhang and propshaft tube is perpendicular to mounting carrier.
