Dismantling bevel box
Dismantling bevel box
–  Place drip tray -V.A.G 1306- underneath.
–  Drain gear oil.
–  Pull out right flange shaft with compression spring and thrust washer.
   
–  Set bevel box in gearbox holder on hole -arrow- marked with the number -3-.
–  Then align bevel box with remaining 3 holes and secure.
Nuts -A- - M 12 x 10 (Qty. 4).
  N39-1118
–  Lock bevel box output shaft using support plate -T10108/1-.
–  Remove output flange hexagon nut.
Socket -A- for 3/4" drive
–  Remove output flange.
-B- - Hexagon bolts M 8 x 25

–  Swing bevel box so that pinion housing -1- points upwards.
–  Pull out oil seal for output flange using multi-purpose tool -VW 771- and puller hooks -VW 771/37-, securing tapered roller bearing inner race against falling out.
–  Remove inner race for outer tapered roller bearing of shaft bevel gear.
–  Remove hexagon bolts for pinion housing to final drive housing.

–  Pull off pinion housing -1-.
A - Two arm puller, e.g. -Kukko 20/10- with hooks -Matra V/170-
  Note!
Pinion housing can also be removed and installed with output flange installed.
–  Remove shim S3.
–  Remove shaft bevel gear with shim S4 and inner race for inner tapered roller bearing from final drive housing.

–  Pull outer race of inner tapered roller bearing out of pinion housing.
A - Counter support, e.g. -Kukko 22/2-
B - Internal puller 46 ... 58mm, e.g. -Kukko 21/7-.

–  Press outer race of outer tapered roller bearing out of pinion housing.

–  Pull inner race for inner tapered roller bearing off shaft bevel gear, apply adapter -V.A.G 1582/1- and clamp securely behind rollers of bearing. Then turn bearing and retighten adapter.
–  If seal for right flange shaft is to be renewed, lever it out now.

–  Remove large cover for bevel gear (with stub shaft).

–  Pull outer race of large tapered roller bearing out of large cover.
A - Counter support, e.g. -Kukko 22/4-
B - Internal puller 56 ... 110 mm, e.g. -Kukko 21/89-.
–  Remove shim S1 from cover.

–  Remove retaining ring for deep groove ball bearing in large cover.
–  Lift one end of retaining ring out of groove by turning screwdriver -A-.
–  Raise this end with a screwdriver -B-.

–  Press deep groove ball bearing for flange shaft out of large cover.

–  Remove the four bolts -A- for small cover.
–  Remove small cover with tapered roller bearing outer race and shim S2.
  Note!
Connecting piece -B- cannot be removed until small cover has been removed.

–  Pull off connecting piece -B- for differential.
A - Two arm puller, e.g. -Kukko 20/10- with hooks -Matra V/170-
–  Carefully raise bevel gear with stub shaft -1- and, at the same time, pull off inner race for small tapered roller bearing -2- by hand.

–  Remove bevel gear with stub shaft.

–  Press inner race of large tapered roller bearing off bevel gear (with stub shaft).
A - Splitter, 22...115 mm, e.g. -Kukko 17/2-

–  Pull roller sleeve out of final drive housing.
A - Internal puller 22 ... 28 mm, e.g. -Kukko 21/4-.

–  Pull out sleeve for oil supply.
A - Counter support, e.g. -Kukko 22/1-
B - Internal puller 14.5 ... 18.5 mm, e.g. -Kukko 21/2-.
(for pulling out large sleeve)
C - Internal puller 8 ... 12 mm, e.g. -Kukko 21/02-.
(for pulling out small sleeve)
  Note!
Pulling can also be done without dismantling bevel box.
