Special tools and workshop equipment required
   
t  Torque wrench -VAG 1331-
–  First the vehicle should be checked if a coded radio is installed. If necessary obtain radio anti-theft code first.
–  With the ignition OFF, disconnect the earth connection from the battery → Electrical system; Rep. gr.27.
–  Remove gaiter with gear knob and noise insulation → Chapter.
–  Remove top part of centre console and, if necessary, securing bracket for centre console. → General body repairs, interior; Rep. gr.68.

–  Unscrew the two nuts -1- on securing bracket -2-.
–  Unscrew the two nuts -3- on securing bracket -4-.

–  Remove the entire air filter housing if it is located over selector mechanism → Rep. gr.23.
l  To avoid damage to gate selector cable, separate cable end-piece from gate selector cable before removal.
–  Pull locking mechanism forward to stop in -direction of arrow 1- and then lock by turning to left in -direction of arrow 2-.
–  Then push relay lever forwards (-in direction of arrow 3-).

Relay lever with catch -arrow 1-
–  To do this, press catch -arrow 1- down to stop and remove relay lever together with cable end-piece. In the process, swing it in direction of operation.
Cable end-piece is secured by catch -arrow 2-.

–  Pull clip -arrow 1- off and remove relay lever together with cable end-piece.
Cable end-piece must be located behind catch -arrow 2-.

Continuation for all vehicles
–  Remove circlip -1- that is attached to gear selector cable on relay lever -2-.
–  Pull gear selector cable off pin -arrow-.

–  Remove the control cable counter supports from the gearbox -arrows-.
–  Remove noise insulation → General body repairs, exterior; Rep. gr.50.
–  Remove tunnel cross member → Rep. gr.26.
–  Remove front exhaust pipe → Rep. gr.26.
Vehicles with all-wheel drive
–  Remove propshaft → Rep. gr.39.
Continuation for all vehicles
–  Remove underbody trim → General body repairs, exterior; Rep. gr.50.
–  Swing down gear lever housing and remove with selector cables.
