Special tools and workshop equipment required
   
t  retention tool -T10027-
  Caution
Determine type of airbags installed in vehicle depending on vehicle model.
  Note
t  Before working with the airbag system, always read the safety precautions → Chapter.
t  Before disconnecting the connectors, mark them to avoid confusion when refitting.
t  Before working on the electrical system, disconnect the battery earth strap.
t  After connecting the battery, check the vehicle equipment (radio, clock, electric windows, etc.) according to the instructions in the Repair Manual and / or the Operating Instructions.
–  Turn off the ignition and all electricity consumers.
–  Disconnect the vehicle battery → Starter motor, voltage supply; Rep. gr.27.
–  Release steering column adjustment.
–  Completely pull out the steering column and adjust it to the lowest position.
–  Lock steering column adjustment.
–  Rotate the steering wheel 90° to the left or to the right.

  WARNING
Protect upper cover -D- on steering column with body tape or similar to prevent scratching.
  WARNING
To prevent deformations, cracks or damage at the insertion circumference -3- of the cylinder -A- ensure, that the tip of the tool -C- and the upper area of the cylinder -A- make contact continuously when positioning the tool. Then secure the tool in the final position with the retaining clips on the steering wheel.
–  Insert retaining tool -T10027- into hollow cylinder on steering wheel-A-. Ensure that the end of the tool -C- maintains continuous contact with the top of the cylinder -A-

   
–  Insert retaining tool -T10027- to stop in area -B-.
  Caution
As soon as retaining clip -2- is released, the airbag should come out partially.
–  The retaining tool -T10027- should incline in direction of -arrow-. This loosens the retaining clip -2- from the anchoring -1-.
–  Turn the steering wheel 180° and repeat the same operation.
–  Put the steering wheel in its centre position (wheels straight).

   
–  Disconnect plug connectors -1- and -3- and remove airbag -2-.

–  Position screwdriver -1- in notch in retainer for connector and push retainer upward.
–  Disconnect connector -2- and disconnect contacts -3-.
