Draining the refrigerant circuit > < Safety measures for working on vehicles with air conditioning and for handling refrigerant

Safety precautions
The following safety measures are to be observed in Germany for this refrigerant (additional regulations may apply in other countries).
The refrigerant circuit is to be discharged first should repair work require the refrigerant circuit to be opened ( → Chapter). Any contact with the refrigerant liquid or vapours of this liquid must be avoided. Should refrigerant nevertheless escape, avoid inhaling the resultant refrigerant/air mixture.
In this situation, turn on any suction system and protect hands with gloves and the eyes with protective glasses.
Reason:
The intensive action of the refrigerant on unprotected parts of the body may lead to freezing of those parts.
  WARNING
Always keep an eye wash flask close to hand.
Should liquid refrigerant come into contact with the eyes, rinse them thoroughly with water for about 15 minutes.
Then apply eye drops and consult a doctor immediately, even if you do not experience any pain in the eyes.
The medical assistance must be given all of the details of the refrigerant causing the problem.
Should refrigerant come into contact with other parts of the body despite compliance with all the pertinent safety measures, these are similarly to be rinsed thoroughly with cold water without delay for at least 15 minutes.
Although refrigerants do not represent a fire hazard, smoking, welding, soldering and brazing are not permitted in areas exposed to refrigerant.
Reason:
If the refrigerant comes into contact with flame or hot elements, the gas in the refrigerant is chemically separated. Inhalation of the resultant toxic decomposition products leads to dry coughing and nausea.
