Hydraulic cam followers: checking
  Note!
t  The cam followers are replaced complete, they cannot be adjusted or repaired.
t  Slight noises from the valves during starting are normal.
Test sequence
–  Start up the engine and make it turn until the radiator fan has switched on.
–  Raise engine speed to 2500 rpm for 2 minutes.
If the cam followers are still producing noise, carry out the following operations to locate the faulty follower:
–  Remove the cylinder head cover.
–  Turn the crankshaft clockwise (seen from the sprocket), until the cams of the followers to be checked are situated above.
Next measure the clearance between cams and followers:
–  If it is greater than 0.1 mm, replace the follower.
–  If it is less than 0.1 mm, continue the check.

–  Press the cam follower downwards using a wooden or plastic wedge.
–  If a free stroke is observed, greater than 0.1 mm up to the valve opening, replace the cam follower.
