Special tools and workshop equipment required
t  Manual multimeter -VAG 1526C- or digital multimeter -VAG 1715-
t  Auxiliary cable kit -VAG 1594C-
t  Adapter cable -VAG 1598/31-

   
t  Adapter cable -VAG 1598/22-
t  Current flow diagrams, electrical fault finding and fitting locations
Test prerequisites
l  Battery voltage min. 11.5 V

Checking sequence
  E24-0200
–  Remove engine protection together with air filter -arrows-, separate the gas vent pipe from the engine.

–  Extract the 3-pin connector from the Hall sender -G40--arrow-.

–  Connect multimeter to measure voltage at contacts 1 (positive) and 3 (earth) of Hall sender -G40-, using the auxiliary cables of the auxiliary cable kit -VAG 1594C-.
–  Switch on ignition.
t  Specification: min. 4.5 V
–  Switch ignition OFF.
If no voltage is present:
Engine code letters: BXV - BBM
–  Connect the engine tester -VAG 1598/22- to the control unit cable harness.

Engine code letters: AZQ - BME
  S01-0089
–  Connect the engine tester -VAG 1598/31- to the control unit cable harness. Without connecting the engine control unit.

All other vehicles continued

–  Check wiring between the adapter cable -VAG 1598/31- or adapter cable -VAG 1598/22- and 3-pin connector for open circuit according to current flow diagram.

Wire resistance: 1.5 Ω max.

–  Additionally check wires for short to one another.
t  Specification: ∞ Ω.
If no wiring fault is detected and voltage was present between contacts 1 + 3:
–  Replace the Hall sender -G40- → Item.
If no fault is found in wiring and there is no voltage between contacts 1+3:
–  Replace the engine control unit → Chapter.
