Removing
  Note
t  To carry out this work it will be necessary to disconnect the battery earth strap. The vehicle should be checked for a fitted radio. If necessary, obtain radio anti-theft code first.
t  The engine is removed upwards together with the gearbox.
t  All cable ties which are opened or cut open when removing the engine, must be replaced in the same position when re-installing.
t  The removed coolant should be put into a clean receptacle to be re-used or disposed of.
–  With the ignition switched off, disconnect the battery earth strap.
–  Remove air filter → Fig..
   
–  Remove battery and battery retainer → Rep. Gr.27.
  WARNING
Fuel supply pipes are under pressure Before removing fuel hose connections, wrap a cloth around the connection. Then release pressure by carefully removing the hose.

–  Separate fuel supply hose at the connector in the suspension turret by pressing the locking buttons.
–  Separate the hose leading from the activated charcoal system to the intake manifold at the connector in the suspension turret by pressing the locking buttons.
–  Seal the pipes so that the fuel system is not contaminated by dirt etc.
–  Observe safety precautions → Chapter.
–  Loosen or separate the following components:
t  The vacuum hose to brake servo from inlet manifold.
t  The engine speed sender connector and the intake air temperature sender or inlet manifold pressure sender
t  Ignition transformer connector and throttle control unit

t  Pull 3-pin connector off hall sender -arrow-.
t  The coolant temperature sender connector and the oil pressure switch
t  Lambda probe connector
t  Injector connectors
t  The knock sensor double connector (cylinder block, rear part).
–  Remove the insulation tray → Rep. Gr.50.
–  Open the expansion tank sealing cap to release the pressure in the cooling system.
–  Disconnect all electric wires from gearbox, alternator and starter and move clear.
–  Remove front exhaust pipe from exhaust manifold → Item.

–  Separate the pendulum support -arrows-.
–  Disconnect selector mechanism from gearbox and move it aside → Rep. Gr.34.
–  Remove the hydraulic clutch slave cylinder and secure it to the bodywork → Rep. Gr.30.
  WARNING
Do not press the clutch pedal after removing the slave cylinder.
–  Drain coolant → Chapter.
–  Remove the coolant pipes from their fixing to the engine using the -T20029- pliers.
Vehicles with air conditioning/heating system
  WARNING
The air conditioning/heating system refrigerant circuit must not be opened.
  Note
To prevent damage to condenser and cooling agent pipes/hoses, ensure that pipes and hoses are not stretched, kinked or bent.
–  Remove ribbed belt → Chapter.
–  Remove the air conditioner/heating system compressor and secure it to the bodywork/lock carrier so that the refrigerant ducts are not under tensio → Rep. Gr.87.
Continued for all vehicles
–  Remove left and right-hand drive shaft from the gearbox and secure it to the bodywork in a raised position → Rep. Gr.40.
–  Pull connectors off thermoswitch and radiator fan.

–  Bring lock carrier into service position → Rep. Gr.50.
–  Remove the coolant pipe from the cylinder head.

–  Fit suspension tool -T20127- as indicated in the illustration and lift a little with the workshop crane.

–  Pretension the engine slightly and remove the fixing bolts -A- from the engine console in the cylinder head support and the fixing bolts -B- from the engine console in the bodywork and remove the console.

–  Remove securing bolts -B- from the gearbox console in the bodywork.
–  Remove the rest of the electric cables, pipes and necessary connectors from their fixings to the engine.
–  Remove the engine upwards, turning it.
  Note
When the assembly is lifted out, it must be carefully guided to prevent damage to bodywork.
