Checking function and voltage supply
Test conditions
l  Battery voltage, 11.5 V at least

l  Fuse No. 7, in order
–  Dismount the protector from the fuel lift unit.
–  Engage the ignition. The fuel pump must start up so that it may be heard by the naked ear (when repeating the check, allow at least 10 s to pass by).
Should the fuel pump not start up:
–  Remove the fuse holder cover.
–  Extract the fuel pump relay -J17- from the relay board with the fuse holders (relay 8 site).
  Note!
If the relay cannot be removed from the relay board without the aid of a tool, the ground strip must be disconnected from the battery beforehand. For this purpose, it must be checked whether the vehicle has a coded radio mounted and so, where applicable, the antitheft code should be consulted.
  N01-0220
–  Attach the remote control -V.A.G 1348/3A- with the adapter cable -V.A.G 1348/3-2- to the contact 2 towards the fuel pump and the battery, positive terminal (+).
–  Work the remote control.
The fuel pump functions:
–  Check the excitation for the fuel pump relay in accordance with the electrics diagram → Current flow diagrams, Electrical fault finding and Fitting locations.
The fuel pump does not function:
–  Swivel the rear seat forwards.
–  Dismount the cover from the fuel storage unit.
Once the cover has been dismounted:

–  Extract the 4 pole connector -1- from the clamp for the fuel tank -2-.
–  Couple up the diode lamp -V.A.G 1527 B- with the auxiliary cables from the -V.A.G 1594 A- or -V.A.G 1594 C- to the outer contacts on the connector.
–  Work the remote control. The LED must light up.
The LED does not light up:
–  Locate and remove the interruption in the wiring by proceeding according to the power circuit diagrams → Current flow diagrams, Electrical fault finding and Fitting locations.
The LED lights up (power supply voltage in order):
  E20-0013
–  Dismount the coupling nut with the wrench -U-40055 A-.
–  Check whether the cables are coupled up between the clamp and the fuel pump.
If no interruption is detected in the cables:
–  Faulty fuel pump, replace the fuel supply unit → Chapter.
