Check the operation and voltage supply
Checking conditions
l  Battery voltage, minimum 11.5 V.
l  Fuse no. 7, correct.
–  Briefly operate the starter motor. The fuel pump should operate audibly for a short period - approx. 1 second -.
In the event that the fuel pump does not work:
–  Remove the fuel pump relay (relay position 9) from the relays plate, with fuse holder -J17-.
  Note!
If the relay cannot be removed from the relays plate without using a tool, disconnect the battery earth strap beforehand. To do so, first check if the vehicle has a coded radio installed, and if necessary, check the anti-theft coding.

–  Connect the remote control -V.A.G 1348/3 A- with the adapter cable -V.A.G 1348/3-2- to contact 2 toward the fuel pump and to the battery, positive terminal (+).
–  Operate the remote control.
The fuel pump works:
–  Check the excitation of the fuel pump relay according to the wiring diagram: → Current flow diagrams, Electrical fault finding and Fitting locations.
The fuel pump does not work:
–  Fold back seat forward.
–  Remove the cover from the fuel supply unit.
Once the cover is removed:
  E20-0012
–  Remove the 4 pole connector -1- from the fuel tank flange -2-.
–  Connect the diode lamp -V.A.G 1527 B- with auxiliary cables -V.A.G 1594- to the external connector contacts.
–  Operate the remote control.
   The diode lamp should flash.
The lamp does not flash:
–  Locate and eliminate the break in the cabling with the help of the wiring diagrams: → Current flow diagrams, Electrical fault finding and Fitting locations
The LED diode flashes (correct voltage supply):
  E20-0013
–  Remove connection nut with spanner -U-40055 A-.
–  Check the connections of the cables between the flange and fuel pump.
If no break is found in the cables:
–  Faulty fuel pump, renew the fuel supply unit → Chapter, Fuel supply unit: removing and installing.
