Checking activated charcoal filter canister for leaks
   
Checking activated charcoal filter canister for leaks
Special tools and workshop equipment required
t  manual vacuum pump -SAT 1390-
t  vacuum gauge check device -V.A.G 1368-
t  Adapter -SAT 1368/1-

Test sequence
   
–  Pull breather pipe/hose -2- from activated charcoal filter -1- off at throttle valve control part -3-.
–  Connect hand vacuum pump -SAT 1390- to hose/pipe -2-.
–  Pull breather hose/pipe -5- off fuel tank to activated charcoal canister and connect to vacuum tester -V.A.G 1368-“connection A”. Use Adapter -SAT 1368/1- when doing this.
–  Connect vacuum tester -V.A.G 1368-“connection B” with breather hose/pipe -4- to activated charcoal canister. Use Adapter -SAT 1368/1- when doing this.
–  Set vacuum tester to position “B”.
–  Initiate final control diagnosis and select tank breather valve -N80- → Diagnostics operations unitVAS 5051.
–  Work the manual vacuum pump -SAT 1390- several times. No pressure reduction must be caused.
If vacuum builds-up:
–  Check the breather connection -6- for the active carbon tank -1- for dirt; where necessary, clean it.
If vacuum does not build-up:
–  Remove fuel filler cap.

–  Connect hand vacuum pump -SAT 1390- to vacuum tester -V.A.G 1368-“connection B”. UseAdapter -SAT 1368/1- when doing this.
–  Set vacuum tester to “A/B” position.
–  Work the hand vacuum pump -SAT 1390- several times. No pressure reduction must be caused.
If vacuum builds-up:
–  Check gravity/overflow valve → Item.
–  Check line -1- from fuel tank for blockage.
If no pressure reduction is caused:
–  Refit fuel filler cap.
–  Work the manual vacuum pump -SAT 1390- several times. No pressure reduction must be caused.
  Note!
If the fuel level in the tank is low the hand vacuum must be operated at least 20...30 times.
If vacuum builds-up:
–  Replace fuel tank cap.
