Sump: removing and installing

Special tools and workshop equipment required

t	Spanner -U-40051A-

t	Hand drill with plastic brush

t	Flat scraper

t	Silicone sealant -D 176 404 A2-

t	Torque wrench -SAT 8010-

Work sequence

–	Drain engine oil.

–	Remove ribbed belt cover.

–	Remove front exhaust pipe from exhaust manifold.

–	Remove right driveshaft at gearbox: → Running gear; Rep. Gr.40.

–	Remove cover plate for flywheel.

–	Tighten the bolts that secure the sump.

–	Remove sump. It may be necessary to release the sump by tapping it lightly with a rubber head hammer.

–	Remove sealant residue on cylinder block with a flat scraper.

–	Remove sealant residue on the sump with a rotating brush, e.g. a hand drill with a plastic brush (wear protective goggles).

–	Clean the sealing surfaces so that they are free of oil and grease.

Note!

t	Note the use-by date of the sealant.

t	Sump must be installed within 5 minutes of applying the silicone sealing compound.

t	To make fitting the sump easier, M6 threaded studs can be placed in 2 points on the cylinder block flange.

–	Cut the tube nozzle off at the front mark (nozzle diameter: approx. 3 mm).

–	Apply silicone sealing compound, as shown, to a clean sump sealing surface. The sealing compound bead should be:

t	2…3 mm thick,

t	and run on inside of bolt holes -arrows-.

Note!

The sealing compound bead must not be any thicker, otherwise excessive sealing compound could enter the sump and block the oil suction pipe strainer.

–	Install sump immediately and lightly tighten all the sump bolts.

–	Tighten sump bolts to 15 Nm.

Note!

After installing sump the sealant must be allowed to dry for approx. 30 minutes. After this time has passed, the sump may be filled.
