Check function and voltage supply
Checking conditions

l  Fuse no. 18, OK.
l  Battery voltage at least 11.5 V.
  Note!
Disconnect the battery earth strap to perform this kind of work. The vehicle should be checked for a fitted radio. If necessary, obtain radio anti-theft code first.
–  Turn ignition on briefly. The fuel pump should be audible for a short time (if the check is repeated, wait for at least 10 seconds).
  Note!
In commercial vehicles, pay special attention to the working of the pump.
–  Switch ignition off.
If the fuel pump does not run:
  E01-0119
–  Extract fuel pump relay -J17- from the relay plate with the fuseholder (position 12).
  Note!
If tools are necessary in order to pull the relays or control units out of the relay plate, first disconnect battery earth strap.
–  Connect remote control -V.A.G 1348/3A- with adapter cable -V.A.G 1348/3-2- to contact 4 and battery positive (+).
–  Operate remote control -V.A.G 1348/3A-.
Fuel pump runs:
–  Check activation of fuel pump relay according to current flow diagram: → Current flow diagrams, Electrical fault finding and Fitting locations.
Fuel pump does not run:
Commercial vehicles
–  Partially separate the front part of the lining carpet in the loading area.
  N24-0153
–  Extract underbody protection plates -3-.
–  Separate the reinforcing cross member.
Kombi vehicles
–  Rock the rear seat forward.
Continued for all vehicles
–  Remove the cover from the fuel delivery unit.
  E20-0068
–  Pull 4-pin connector -1- off the flange on fuel delivery unit -2-.
–  Connect diode test lamp -V.A.G 1527B- with aux. cables from -V.A.G 1594- or 1594C to the outer contacts of the connector.
–  Operate remote control.
The LED must light up
LED does not light up:
–  Locate and eliminate open circuit using current flow diagram: → Current flow diagrams, Electrical fault finding and Fitting locations.
LED lights up (voltage supply OK.):
  N20-0039
–  Remove union nut with spanner -U-40055 A-.
–  Check that the electrical wires between flange and fuel pump are connected.
If no open circuit can be found:
–  Fuel pump defective, renew fuel delivery unit → Chapter; fuel delivery unit: removal and fitting.
