Checking hydraulic bucket tappets
Checking hydraulic bucket tappets
Special tools and workshop equipment required
t  Feeler gauge
t  Wooden or plastic wedge
  Note!
t  Renew defective bucket tappet complete (cannot be adjusted or repaired).
t  Irregular valve noises when starting are normal.
Test sequence
–  Start engine and run until the radiator fan has switched on once.
–  Increase revolutions to approx. 2500 rpm for 2 minutes.
If the hydraulic tappets are still noisy, locate defective tappets as follows:
–  Remove cylinder head cover.
–  Rotate crankshaft clockwise until the cam lob of the bucket tappet to be checked is pointing upwards.
–  Determine play between cam lob and bucket tappet.

–  Press bucket tappet down lightly with a wooden or plastic wedge. If, when bucket tappet is pressed down a 0.2 mm thick feeler gauge can be inserted between the camshaft and the bucket tappet the bucket tappet is to be renewed.
  Note!
After installing new bucket tappets the engine must not be started for 30 minutes. Hydraulic compensation elements must settle (otherwise valves will strike the piston crown).
