Special tools and workshop equipment required
t  spark plug spanner -T20028-
t  torque wrench -SAT 8010-
t  compression tester -V.A.G 1763- of -V.A.G 1381-

Test conditions
l  Engine oil temperature, min. 30 °C.
Work sequence
   
–  Removing and installing cover over camshaft housing -arrows-.
–  Remove the spark plug connectors and HT cables.
–  Remove spark plugs with tool -T20028-.
–  Pull 4-pin connector off ignition transformer -arrow-.
–  Remove fuse no. 18 from the main junction box.
–  Ask another operator to press the accelerator to the floor, so the throttle valve is completely open.
–  Check compressions with compression tester -V.A.G 1381/V.A.G 1763-.
  Note!
See relevant test unit operating instructions for instructions on how to use test unit.
–  Operate starter until tester shows no further pressure increase.
Compression pressure:
New: 10...15 bar Wear limit: 7 bar
Permissible difference between all cylinders: 3 bar
–  Install spark plugs with spark plug socket and extension -T20028- and tighten to 30 Nm.
–  Interrogate fault memory → Injection and Ignition System, 4LV; Rep. Gr.01.
