Catalytic converter checking
Special tools and workshop equipment required
   
t  engine speed adjuster -V.A.G 1788/10-
t  fault reader -V.A.G 1551- or vehicle system tester -V.A.G 1552- with cable -V.A.G 1551/3B-
Check conditions
  W00-0437
l  Fuse no. 18, OK.
l  Vehicle stationary
l  All electric consumers, e.g.: lights and rear window heater must be switched off.
l  If the vehicle is equipped with air conditioning, this must be switched off.
l  Exhaust system between catalytic converter and cylinder head must be free of leaks.
l  Coolant temperature 80 °C, minimum → Display group 04, display field 3.
l  Intake air temperature less than 60 °C → Display group 04, display field 4.
Functional check
–  Connect fault reader -V.A.G 1551/V.A.G 1552-. Start engine and use “address code” 01 to select engine control unit → Injection and Ignition System, 4LV; Rep. Gr.01.
Lambda probe ageing diagnostic (period monitoring)
  E01-0119
Indicated on display:
–  Press keys 0 and 4 for the function “Introduction of basic setting” and confirm entry with the Q -key.

Indicated on display:
–  Press keys 0, 3 and 4 for “Display group number 34” and confirm entry with Q -key.
  
Basic setting                       HELP

Indicated on display: (1...4 = Display fields)
–  Give two throttle bursts, raising rpm over 5000.
–  Set an engine speed of 1500...3900 rpm with speed regulator -V.A.G 1788/10-.
–  Maintain rpm at 1500-3900 until display in display field 4 changes from “Test OFF” to “Test ON”.
  Note!
This process can take a few minutes.
–  Check period in display field 3.
Specification: 1.0 s, max.
–  Continue to hold speed at 1500-3900 rpm until display field 4 reads “F1-S1 OK”.
If the display does not indicate as described:
–  Press → -key.
–  Interrogate fault memory → Injection and Ignition System, 4LV; Rep. Gr.01.
If the display indicates as described:
–  Press C -key.
Catalytic converter diagnosis
  Note!
This diagnosis will only be terminated if the Lambda probe ageing before catalyst diagnosis is first successfully completed.

Indicated on display:
–  Press keys 0, 4 and 6 for “Display group number 46” and confirm entry with Q -key.

Indicated on display: (1...4 = Display fields)
–  Raise revs to 1500...3900 RPM with the aid of -V.A.G 1788/10- and maintain.
–  Let engine run at this speed until field 4 changs from “Test OFF”to“Test ON”. Catalytic converter temperature in fild 2 must be at least 300 °C.
–  Check catalytic conversion measuement value in field 3:
   Specifications: 50 % min
–  Let engine continue to un fast until you can see in field 4 “Cat F1 OK”.
If the display does not indicate as described:
–  Interrogate fault memory → Injection and Ignition System, 4LV; Rep. Gr.01.
If the display indicates as described:
–  Press → -key.
–  Press keys 0 and 6 for the “End output” function and confirm input with the Q -key.
–  Switch off ignition.
