Installing > < Removing and installing cylinder head

  WARNING
When doing any repair work, especially in the engine compartment, pay attention to the following due to the cramped conditions:
t  Route all the various lines (e.g. for fuel, hydraulics, activated charcoal filter system, coolant, refrigerant, brake fluid and vacuum) and electrical wiring in their original positions.
t  Ensure that there is sufficient clearance to all moving or hot components.
–  With ignition switched off, disconnect earth strap from battery.
–  Remove engine cover.
–  Before removing cylinder head extract fuel using hand vacuum pump -V.A.G 1390- and fluid receptacle -V.A.G 1390/1- on the tandem pump → Chapter.
–  Remove toothed belt → Chapter.
–  Remove hub for camshaft pulley → Chapter.
–  Remove front exhaust pipe from turbocharger → Chapter.
–  Drain coolant → Chapter.
–  Pull off or disconnect all other electrical connections as necessary from cylinder head and lay to side.
–  Separate all connecting, coolant and vacuum hoses from cylinder head.
   
–  Remove engine support -1- and in place screw retainer -T10014- into cylinder block.
–  Tighten securing bolt -2- of retainer -T10014- to 20 Nm.

–  Secure the spindle -A- to retainer -T10014- and slightly lift engine until the spindle -B- is relieved.
–  Remove spindle -B-.
–  Remove cylinder head cover → Chapter.

–  Loosen cylinder head bolts in the sequence given starting at the outside and working inwards and then remove completely.
–  Carefully remove cylinder head.
–  Place clean cloths in cylinders so that no dirt or emery cloth particles can get in between cylinder wall and piston.
–  Also prevent dirt and emery cloth particles from getting into coolant.
–  Now carefully clean sealing surfaces of cylinder head and cylinder block. Ensure thereby that surfaces are not scored or scratched (if abrasive paper is used, grade must not be less than 100).
