Draining
  Note
Collect drained coolant in a clean container for re-use or disposal.
  WARNING
Hot vapour/hot coolant may escape when opening expansion tank. Cover cap with cloth and open carefully.
–  Open cap on coolant expansion tank.
  W00-10435
–  Unscrew the securing bolts -arrows- and remove the engine soundproofing..
  E10-0086
–  Loosen the angled bracket -1- and -2- and remove the right hose from the charged air cooler.
  Note
To prevent coolant from entering, seal off the connection on charge air cooler with a clean plug from engine sealing plug set -VAS 6122-.
  A21-10489
–  Place the drip tray -VAS 6208- under the engine.
–  Loosen the spring-type hose -2- and disconnect the hoses from the coolant circulation pump 2 -V178--3-.
  E19-10044
–  Loosen the spring-type hose clip -arrow- and remove the bottom hose from the radiator.
  N19-10340
–  To drain coolant from engine also remove coolant hose from oil cooler -arrow-.
  Note
Observe disposal regulations!
Top up
  Note
t  The cooling system is filled all year round with a mixture of water and coolant additive (combined anti-freeze and corrosion protection agent).
t  With the range of models later than 2008, only Gº12º plus-plus anti-freeze agent must be used according to standard TL VWº774ºG.
t  The range of models up to and including 2007 can use Gº12º plus anti-freeze agent, according to TLºVWº774ºF and Gº12º plus-plus, according to TLºVWº774ºG.
t  G 12 plus-plus can be mixed with G 12 plus antifreeze agent. Both agents are coloured mauve.
t  „TL VW 774 G“ or „TL VW 774 F“ anti-freeze agents prevent damage from rust, freezing or lime sediment, and also raise the boiling point of the coolant. For these reasons, the cooling system must be filled all year round with an anti-freeze and anti-corrosion agent.
t  In countries with a tropical climate, the cooling liquid increases the boiling point and guarantees secure operation when the engine is put under strain.
t  Frost protection is required down to about -25 °C (in countries with arctic climates: down to about -35 ℃).
t  During hotter seasons of the year and in hot countries, the coolant concentration should not be reduced by adding only water. The amount of anti-freeze in the coolant must be at least 40 %.
t  If for climatic reasons it is necessary to increase the coolant protection, you may raise the proportion of the antifreeze agent and anti-corrosive, but without exceeding 60% (antifreeze protection up to -40 ºC), from this proportion the antifreeze protection is diminished, aside from reducing the coolant capacity.
t  Use only clean tap water for mixing coolant.
t  Do not use drained coolant again if:
t  When the radiator has been replaced, the heater heat interchanger, the cylinder head, the gasket of the cylinder head or the cylinder block.
t  the coolant is contaminated or dirty.
t  To check the antifreeze protection in the coolant system use the refractometer -T10007-.
t  Secure all hose connections with the correct type of hose clips (same as original equipment) → Parts catalogue.

1) The quantity of coolant can vary depending upon the vehicle equipment.
–  Reconnect the coolant hose.
–  Connect the coolant hose to the oil cooler and to the coolant circulation pump -V178-.

–  Install the engine cover -arrows-.
With cooling system filler -VAS 6096-:
–  Screw in the adaptor -VAG 1274/8- to the expansion tank.
–  Fill the coolant circulation using the cooling system filler -VAS 6096- → Instruction manual for the cooling system filler for the coolant circulation VAS 6096
  E10-0086
–  Fill the compensation tank of the cooling system charge unit -VAS 6096- with at least 8 litres of premixed coolant (according to recommended ratio).
Without cooling system filler -VAS 6096-:
  A19-0351
–  Slowly fill coolant to upper marking of shaded field on expansion tank.
–  Close expansion tank.
–  Start the engine and keep the engine speed at approx. 2000 / min for approx. 3 minutes.
–  Allow the engine to run idle until radiator fan cuts-in.
–  Check coolant level and top up any missing coolant, if necessary. When the engine is at normal operating temperature, the coolant level must be at the top mark, and when the engine is cold, in the middle of the shaded area.
