Operation process
  Caution
If the bolt of the idle drive has been slackened or if the drive pinion has been replaced on the crankshaft or the crankshaft has been removed, a new idle drive with coating must be fitted and the hub → Item with bolt → Item must be replaced as well as the axial support disc otherwise the backlash will not be correct. Procedure for installation → Chapter.
  Note
t  If re-installing the "old" balance shaft assembly and neither the drive gear on the crankshaft nor the crankshaft itself have been renewed, proceed as described in the following. It is also essential that the idler gear has NOT been slackened.
t  If the bolt for the idler gear has been slackened or the drive gear on the crankshaft or the crankshaft itself have been renewed, you must install a new idler gear with the appropriate coating. Procedure for installation → Chapter „Fitting a new balance shaft assembly“.
t  Renew the bolts tightened with specified tightening angle.

–  Lock the balance shaft using the pinning tool -T10255-; If necessary, turn the balance shaft.
l  The lug of the locking tool must engage in the groove of the balance shaft.
–  If not already fitted, fit dowel sleeves into cylinder block for centring balance shaft assembly.
–  Attach balance shaft assembly to cylinder block.
l  With the balance shaft locked in position, the idler gear must engage in the drive gear on the crankshaft.
l  Idler gear must have noticeable backlash.

–  Tighten the screws in the sequence -1 … 8- by hand.
–  Tighten the bolts of the balance shaft assembly as follows:
1.  Tighten to 6 Nm in the sequence -1 ... 8-.
2.  Tighten the bolts -5- and -7- to 13 Nm.
3.  Continue turning bolts -5- and -7- a further 90° (1/4 turn) using a rigid wrench.
4.  Tighten the bolts -1 -4-, -6- and -8- to 20 Nm.
5.  Continue turning bolts -1 ... -4-, -6- and -8- a further 90° (1/4 turn) using a rigid wrench.
–  Extract the counterhold -T10050-.
The remaining installation steps are carried out in reverse sequence - note the following points:
–  Fit the oil sump → Chapter.
