Removing and installing fuel tank t  Removing → Anchor t  Fitting → Anchor t  Specified torques → Anchor.

Special tools and workshop equipment required

t	counterhold -T10038-, see equivalent → Anchor

t	Torque wrench -VAG 1331-, see equivalent → Anchor.

t	Hydraulic jack -VAG 1383A-, see equivalent → Anchor

Removing Observe safety precautions → Chapter. Observe rules for cleanliness → Chapter.   Note Before carrying out further work, disconnect battery earth strap. To this end, it is necessary to check whether the vehicle has a coded radio. If so, refer to the anti-theft coding. –  With ignition switched off, disconnect earth strap from battery. –  Fold rear seat bench forwards.

–  Remove cover from fuel delivery unit. –  The -arrow- points forwards.

–  Extract the connector -1- from the supply unit.   Note Ignore positions -2- and -3-. l  The fuel tank must be empty when it is removed from the vehicle in order to reduce weight. Empty fuel tank if necessary → Chapter.   WARNING The vehicle must be secured to the lifting platform, else the it could slip.

–  Secure the vehicle with support tool -T10038- on both sides of the lifting platform. –  Remove rear shaft: → Running gear, shaft, direction; Rep. gr.42. –  Remove rear right wheel housing moulding → Bodywork - exterior fitting work; Rep. gr.66.

–  Disconnect the fuel supply -1- and return -2- tubes in the front right of the tank.   Note Press buttons on hose couplings to do this. –  Remove rear silencer. –  Remove the left hand side thermal protection plate.

–  Extract the bolt from the filler neck -arrow-. –  Support the fuel tank using the engine and gearbox jack -VAG 1383A-.

–  Unscrew securing bolts for fuel tank -arrows-. –  Extract the fuel filler neck from the rubber seal on the fuel tank cover and lower the fuel tank. Fitting Install in reverse order to dismantling, noting the following: –  Install breather and fuel hoses free of kinks. –  Ensure that fuel hose connections are tight. –  Do not mix up the feed and return tubes (Return tube blue or with blue marking, feed tube black). –  Clip supply and return lines onto fuel tank.   Note After installing fuel tank, check that the supply, return and breather lines are still clipped onto the fuel tank. Specified torques .
