–  Remove bolts -arrows-.
–  Remove air duct -2-.
–  Remove poly V-belt → Chapter.
  A10-0900
–  Set up support bracket -10-222A- with adapters -10-222/3- on wing mounting flanges.
–  Take up weight of engine using support bracket spindle (do not raise).
  A34-10016
–  Release quick-fasteners -1- and -2- and take off front noise insulation.
–  If fitted, release quick fasteners -3- and remove rear noise insulation.
  A10-1320
–  Unscrew bolts -Arrows- from sound-proofing holder.
  A10-0968
–  Place used oil collection and extraction unit -VAG 1782- under engine and drain engine oil.
–  Disconnect connector -arrow- from oil level and oil temperature sensor -G266- (if installed).
  A17-0215
–  Unscrew oil pan plug -Arrow- from mount for refrigerant line.
  A10-10286
–  Unplug the connector -1- of the line to the magnetic clutch of the air conditioning compressor.
  WARNING
The air conditioning refrigerant circuit must not be opened.
–  Remove bolts -arrows- for air conditioner compressor.
  Note
To prevent damage to the refrigerant lines, ensure that the pipes and hoses are not stretched, kinked or bent.
–  Tie up air conditioner compressor to vehicle, with lines attached.
  A10-10234
–  Unscrew bolts -arrows- and detach torque reaction support.
  A17-0223
–  If fitted, unclip actuator rod for vehicle level sender (front left) -G78- at bottom transverse link -arrow-.
  A17-0147
–  Remove bolts -1- and -2- from anti-roll bar mounting.
  A21-0251
–  Cut cable strap -arrows-, open bracket on starter cable and remove electrical line.
  A17-0045
–  Check with plug gauge -3393- whether holes -1- and -2- coincide.
  WARNING
If this is not the case, wheel alignment must be performed after installing subframe.
  A40-0125
–  Support equipment carrier with engine and gearbox jack -VAG 1383A-.
–  Unscrew nut -3- at bottom of engine mounting.
–  Unscrew bolts -4- and -5- on console for engine mounting.
–  Unscrew bolt -1- (front) for subframe and remove console for engine mounting -2-.
–  Repeat procedure on other side of vehicle.
–  Slowly lower equipment carrier with engine and gearbox jack -VAG 1383A-.
  A21-0252
–  Lift engine up slightly using spindle of support bracket -10-222A-; make sure the selector linkage and exhaust system do not become trapped.
  A34-10016
–  Unscrew the attachment bolts -arrows- for the gearbox oil sump.
  A17-10067
–  Unscrew bolt -arrow- at support for intake manifold.

Installing
Reassembly is carried out in the reverse order; note the following:
  Note
t  Renew gaskets and seals.
t  Fit the cable clamps in the same position as they were.
–  Remove sealant residue on cylinder block carefully. To do this remove baffle plate.
–  Remove sealant residue from sump, e.g. with rotating plastic brush or similar.
  WARNING
Wear eye protection.
–  Clean sealing surfaces; they must be free of oil and grease.
  N17-0012
–  Cut off the tube nozzle on the front marking (diameter of the nozzle approximately. 2 mm).
  A17-0081
–  Apply bead of sealant onto clean sealing surface of sump as shown in illustration.
l  Thickness of the sealant grub: 2 ... 3 mm.
  Note
t  The sealant bead must not be thicker than specified, otherwise excess sealant could enter the oil sump and clog the strainer in the pump.
t  Take particular care when applying sealant bead in area of rear sealing flange -arrows-.
t  The sump must be installed within 5 minutes after applying sealant.
  A17-0041
–  Immediately install sump and tighten bolts in the sequence indicated:
1.  Tighten the bolts -1 … 18- to 5 Nm crossways.
2.  Tighten sump/gearbox bolts: 45 Nm.
3.  Tighten bolts M10 -arrows- to 40 Nm.
4.  Tighten the bolts -1 … 18- diagonally to 15 Nm.
  Note
  A17-0208
t  When installing the sump -3- with the engine removed from the vehicle, make sure that it is positioned flush with the intermediate plate -1- at the flywheel end. In other words, the sump should protrude by 0.8 mm (distance -a-) from cylinder block -2-.
t  After installing the oil sump, the sealant must dry for approx. 30 minutes. Only then should the engine be refilled with oil.
–  Install subframe → Running gear, front-wheel drive and four-wheel drive; Rep. gr.40.
–  Install the stabilizer bar → Running gear, Front-wheel drive and 4WD; Rep. gr.40.
–  Install the air conditioner compressor → air conditioning system ; Rep. gr.87.
–  Install poly V-belt → Chapter.
