Special tools and workshop equipment required
t  Spanner -T40080-, see equivalent → Anchor
t  Hose clamp -T10252-, see equivalent → Anchor
t  Hose clamp -T10115-, see equivalent → Anchor
t  Turning tool -T10020-, see equivalent → Anchor
t  Torque wrench -V.A.G 1332-, see equivalent → Anchor.

Removing
–  Remove high-pressure pump → Chapter.
–  Remove cylinder head cover → Chapter
–  Remove vacuum pump from → brake system; Rep. gr.47.
   
–  Remove the variator cover -arrows-.

–  Make the mark on the camshaft sprocket and the mark on the notched belt guard coincide. The recesses -arrows- point only vertically upwards.

–  Mount and fasten the retention tool -T10252- as shown in the fig. -arrows-.
–  Release the fastening screw of the camshaft setter with the key -T40080-.

–  Compress the chain tensioning device -arrow A-, and lock using the retention tool -T10115--arrow B-.
–  Unscrew the fastening screw of the setter and remove the camshaft setter.
Installing

l  The camshafts are locked with the rig pin -T10252-.
–  Place the chain onto the variator.

–  Juxtapose the camshaft setter to the outlet camshaft such that the notch -A- and the stud -B- are opposed.

–  In this position, place the chain on the gearwheel of the inlet camshaft (first top -arrow-).

–  By using the rotation tool -T10020- rotate the inlet camshaft slowly in the direction arrow -A-, until the setter can be mounted on the camshaft.
  Note
If the stud does not run in the notch: remove the chain and place it anew.
–  Tighten the fastening screw of the setter to 100 Nm. Use the key -T40080- for this purpose.

–  Extract the retention tool -T10115--arrow B-.
Installation is done in the reverse order.
–  Install cylinder head cover → Chapter.
–  Install high-pressure pump → Chapter.
–  Install vacuum pump on → brake system; Rep. gr.47.
