  Note
t  If when repairing an engine, metal shavings or large quantities of small metal particles - caused, for example, by partial seizure of crankshaft and conrod bearings - are found in engine oil, to prevent consequential damage, apart from thoroughly cleaning oil passages, it is necessary to replace the oil cooler.
t  The oil level must not be above max. mark on dipstick - danger of damage to catalytic converter. Engine oil level: checking → Chapter.
Oil pressure and oil pressure switch: checking → Chapter
Oil capacity
With 4 litre oil filter
Engine oil specifications
Use oils in line with Standard -VW 500 00-, -VW 501 01- or -VW 502 00-. Only in exceptional cases: Multi-grade oils corresponding to API-SF or SG specifications.

2 - Sealing flange
q   Removing and installing → Chapter
q   Fit with silicon-based sealant -D 176 404 A2- → Chapter
q   Replacing crankshaft oil seal on pulley end → Chapter
3 - Pressure relief valve, 27 Nm
q   Opening pressure: 2.5 … 3.2 bar → Fig.
4 - Oil spray jet and pressure valve
q   For piston cooling → Fig.
5 - Oil dipstick
q   The oil level should not be over the Max. mark
q   Check the level → Chapter.
6 - Filling funnel
q   Remove in case of oil evacuation through absorption
q   With mounting on intake manifold
7 - Guide pipe
8 - Centring bushes
9 - O-ring
q   Replace
10 - 15 Nm
11 - Oil intake pipe
q   Clean filter if soiled
12 - Baffle plate
13 - Upper part of oil sump
q   Removing and installing → Chapter
q   Fit with silicon-based sealant -D 176 404 A2-
14 - 15 Nm
15 - 22 Nm
16 - Lower part of oil sump
q   If the upper sum is removed, fit with silicon-based sealant -D 176 404 A2-
17 - Ring gasket
q   Replace
18 - Oil drain plug, 30 Nm
19 - 10 Nm
20 - Oil pump
q   With 12 bar relief valve
q   Removing and installing → Chapter
q   Before fitting, check that the two centring bushes → Item of oil pump/cylinder block are fitted
q   Replace if scoring is found on the sliding surfaces and gears
q   Pump cover to casing tightening torque: 10 Nm
21 - Sprocket for oil pump
q   It can only be inserted into one position on the oil pump shaft
22 - Chain for oil pump
q   Mark D.O.R. before removing
q   Check for wear
23 - 25 Nm
24 - Chain tension device with tensor rail, 15 Nm
q   Do not remove, replace complete
q   Note installation position
q   When fitting, pre-tension spring and engage

2 - Bolt with pressure relief valve (27 Nm)
t  Opening pressure: 2.5 … 3.2 bar
