Special tools and workshop equipment required
   
t  Tightening torque -VAG 1331-, see equivalent → Anchor

t  Coolant tester -VAS 5187-, see equivalent → Anchor
t  Central diagnosis -VAS 505X-
t  Diagnosis cable -VAS 5051/6B-
Test requirements
l  Coolant temperature at least 85 °C.
l  Injector pump units in good condition.
l  The fuel filter and the fuel lines must not be clogged.
Checking sequence
Observe safety precautions → Chapter.
Observe rules for cleanliness → Chapter.

–  Detach the outer -1- and inner -2- engine covers, by pulling them evenly upwards.

–  Remove the electrical connector -5- from the air mass meter -G70-.
–  Remove the ventilation hose -1- and loosen the bracket -2- of the air duct hose -3-.
–  Separate the air hose -6- and the flexible air hose -8-.
–  Unscrew bolt -7- and remove air filter housing.
  WARNING
t  Fuel system is under pressure! Before opening the system place a cloth around the connection. Then release pressure by carefully loosening the connection.
t  For those vehicles fitted with an injector pump, the temperature of the fuel and the fuel lines may reach up to 100 ºC in extreme cases. Before opening the duct connections, allow the fuel to cool otherwise there is a risk of severe burns.
t  When carrying out work on the fuel system, always wear gloves and protective glasses.

–  Unscrew screw plug -2-.

–  Connect the pressure gauge -VAS 5187- with the banjo bolt -VAS 5187/1A- as shown.
–  Start engine and run at idling speed.
–  Connect the vehicle diagnosis, testing and information system -VAS 5052- and select the “vehicle self diagnosis mode”.
–  Touch the screen on “01 - Engine electronics”.
–  Select diagnostic function “08 - Read measured value block”.
–  Use the numeric keypad to enter the display group “1” and acknowledge the input with the Q key.
–  Read the idle engine speed in the indication field “1”.
–  Increase the engine speed to 4000 rpm.
–  Read the pressure on the gauge.
Specification: Min. 7.5 bar
If the specification is not obtained:
–  Pinch off the return pipe between the fuel filter and the tandem pump with a hose clamp.
–  Increase the engine speed to 4000 rpm.
–  Read the pressure on the gauge.
Specification: Min. 7.5 bar
If the specified value is achieved:
Loss of pressure in the injector-pump.
–  Replace the O-ring of the injectors-pump.
If the specification is not obtained:
–  Replace the tandem pump → Chapter.
  Note
After removing the pressure tester, tighten the screw plug to 25 Nm. The seal must be replaced.
