Valve seating: revision
Special tools and workshop equipment required
t  Depth gauge
t  Valve seat refacing tool
  Note!
t  When repairing engines with valves that are not airtight, it will not be enough to revise or replace the valve seats and valves. It is particularly important on high mileage engines to check the valve guides for wear.
t  The valve seats should only be reworked just enough to produce a perfect seating pattern. The maximum permissible reworking dimension must be calculated before reworking commences. If the reworking dimension is exceeded, the function of the hydraulic tappets can no longer be guaranteed and the cylinder head should be renewed.
Calculate the max. permissible reworking dimension
–  Insert valve and press firmly against seat.
  Note!
If the valve is to be renewed as part of a repair, use a new valve for the calculation.

–  Measure the distance -a- between the top of the rod and the top edge of the cylinder head.
Calculate the maximum reworking dimension starting from the distance measured -a- and the minimum dimension.
Minimum dimensions:
Inlet valve 35.8 mm
Exhaust valve 36.1 mm
Distance measured -a- minus the minimum measurement = maximum reworking dimension.
