  Note!
t  If when repairing an engine, metal shavings or large quantities of small metal particles - caused, for example, by partial seizure of crankshaft and conrod bearings - are found in engine oil, to prevent consequential damage, apart from thoroughly cleaning oil passages, it is necessary to renew the oil cooler.
t  The oil level must not be above the max. mark - danger of damaging catalytic converter!
Checking oil pressure and oil pressure switch → Chapter.
Oil capacity:
without oil filter 3.8 ltr. with oil filter 4.3 ltrs.
Engine oil specifications:
Only use engine oil according to standard VW 505 00 or 505 01. The oil has to be changed every 12 months or every 15,000 kilometres and the service interval indicator has to be programmed accordingly. Procedure:

Engine oil specifications for long service intervals:
In engines developed for long service intervals use engine oil to standard VW 506 00 or 506 01.
   
Part I
Part II, Oil filter bracket: dismantling → Anchor
1 - Oil pump
q   With 12 bar relief valve
q   Before assembly, check that the two centering sleeves of: oil pump/cylinder block
q   If scoring is found on the sliding surfaces and gears: replace
q   Dismantling and fitting → Chapter; Oil pump: removing and installing
2 - Oil pump gear
q   Take note of assembly position
q   It can only be inserted into one position on the oil pump spindle
3 - 25 Nm
4 - Chain for oil pump
5 - Sealing flange
q   with oilseal
q   Assemble with silicone sealant -D 176 404 A2- → Chapter
q   Removing and installing → Chapter
q   Do not additionally oil or grease the oil seal sealing lip
q   Before installing, remove oil remains from crankshaft journal with a clean cloth
q   Must be located on dowel sleeves
q   Renew crankshaft oilseal - pulley end → Chapter
6 - 15 Nm
7 - Chain tensioner with tensioning plate 15 Nm
q   On assembling, pretension the spring and hook it
8 - Sprocket
9 - Dipstick
q   The oil level must not go above the max. mark!
q   Markings → Fig.
10 - Funnel
q   Pull off to extract oil
11 - Guide tube
12 - Oil spray jet
q   To cool the pistons
q   Note fitting position: Turn the oil injector anti-clockwise until it is stopped by the engine block and tighten it in this position
13 - Pressure relief valve
q   25 Nm
q   It opens at 0.25...0.32 bar pressure
q   Fit without sealer
14 - O-ring
q   Renew
15 - Suction pipe
q   Clean filter if soiled
16 - Baffle plate
17 - Sump
q   Clean sealing surface before installing
q   Assemble with silicone sealant -D 176 404 A2- → Chapter
18 - Oil drain screw, 30 Nm
q   If the sealing ring is leaking, nip open and replace the o-ring

   
Dipstick level marks
1 - Max. mark
2 - Min. mark
a - Area above hatched field up to max. mark: do not add oil
b - Oil level within hatched field: can be topped up with engine oil
c - Area from min. mark up to hatched field: fill with max. 0.5 ltr. of engine oil

q   25 Nm

q   Renew
3 - Oil cooler
q   Ensure clearance to adjacent components
q   See note → Chapter
4 - Gasket
q   Renew
q   Hold with tabs provided on the oil cooler
5 - Plug
q   25 Nm
q   With o-ring
q   Do not loosen
6 - Oil pressure switch -F1-
q   20 Nm
q   0.7 bar switch: brown
q   If the sealing ring is leaking, nip open and replace the o-ring
q   Checking → Chapter; Oil pressure and oil pressure switch: checking
7 - Oil filter bracket
q   With integrated relief valve (0.5 bar)
8 - 15 Nm + 1/4 turn (90 °)
q   Renew
q   First fit the top left and bottom right bolts and then tighten the four bolts diagonally.
9 - Gasket
q   Renew
10 - O- ring
q   Renew
11 - Plug
q   25 Nm
q   Do not loosen
12 - Cover
q   25 Nm
13 - O-ring
q   Renew
14 - Oil filter element
q   Replace the O-rings
q   Take note of assembly position: top = top
15 - O-ring
q   Renew
