Special tools and workshop equipment required
   
t  10 mm articulated wrench -3220-, see equivalent → Anchor

t  Base -3314-, see equivalent → Anchor
  Caution
t  The ceramic glow plugs are very delicate due to the special properties of its materials and must be handled with special care when mounting as well as dismounting them.
t  Only use certified ceramic preheating glow plugs → Spares catalogue.
t  Transport and store only with the proper original boxing or with padded plastic individual wrapping.
t  Do not unpack the ceramic plugs until the moment you will use them.
t  The ceramic preheating glow plugs are sensitive to bumps and torsion. For this do not use glow plugs that have fallen, even from an altitude of some 2 cm, even if no damage is detected (like fine cracks).
t  Replace the ceramic preheating glow plugs when you doubt its condition.
t  Broken or damaged ceramic glow plugs can cause damage to the engine.
t  If the plug breaks remove from the fuel chamber all the fragments before switching the ignition on, otherwise, the engine will fail due to piston seizing.
t  The compression test should be selected in the „Guided fault finding“ with the function „Diagnostic susceptible systems“ → Vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system VAS 5051.
t  The ceramic preheating glow plugs should not be dismounted for the compression test.

Removing .
–  Switch ignition OFF.
–  Remove the engine cover upwards -arrows-.
  Caution
t  Ensure that no line connection is damaged when disconnecting the glow plug connectors, as the entire wiring harness otherwise has to be renewed.
t  Do not compress the pliers -3314- to firmly to remove the glow plug connector, otherwise the support sleeve may be damaged.

–  Open retaining clips -arrows- on wiring harness and pull electrical connectors off glow plugs.

–  Position pliers -3314- with groove -arrow A- on support sleeve shoulder -arrow B- and pull glow plug connectors off glow plugs.
  Note
Separate all necessary electric connections so that damage cannot be caused to the wiring harness.
–  Clean glow plug openings in cylinder head; make sure no dirt gets into cylinder.
  Note
t  Cleaning procedure:
t  Use a vacuum cleaner to remove coarse dirt.
t  Spray brake cleaner or suitable cleaning agent into glow pin plug opening, let it work in briefly, and blow out with compressed air.
t  Then clean glow plug opening using a cloth moistened with oil.

–  To loosen the glow plugs, use the jointed spanner E/C 10 -3220-.
Fitting .
Installation is carried out in reverse order, noting the following:
–  To tighten the glow plugs, use the jointed spanner E/C 10 -3220- with a suitable torque wrench.
l  Tightening torque: 18 Nm

–  Reattach glow plug connectors -1- to glow plugs -arrow-.
  Note
Make sure that glow plug connectors are firmly seated.
–  Clear fault memory of engine control unit.
