Engine control unitJ623 with locking device type I: Removing and installing
Engine control unit -J623- with locking device type I: Removing and installing

Special tools and workshop equipment required
   
t  Electric knife -SAT 1561-, see equivalent → Anchor

t  Wiring harness repair set -VAS 1978A-, see equivalent → Anchor
t  Pliers
Engine control unit -J623- with locking device type I: Removing → Anchor
Engine control unit -J623- with locking device type I: Fitting → Anchor
Removing
–  Switch ignition OFF.
  Note
If the engine control unit has to be renewed, in Vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system -VAS 505X-, in the „Guided Functions“, select the option „Engine control unit: Replace“.
–  Remove the plenum chamber cap → Remove and install the plenum chamber cap; Rep. gr.55.
  Note
Cover painted surfaces with a cloth to prevent scratching.

–  With the help of the electric knife -SAT 1561- and the saw 102-SAT 1561/9-, make 2 parallel cuts -arrows- in the headless bolts.
–  Remove the bolts using pressure pliers or similar tool.

–  Insert a screwdriver-A- between the control unit bracket and the locking device -arrow-.
–  Turn the locking device outwards using the screwdriver -A-, and remove by pushing in the direction of the -arrow-.

–  Unlock front connector -1- from the engine control unit and pull it off.
–  Carefully prise off the retaining plate safety clip -2- and next remove the engine control unit, pushing in the direction of the -arrow-.
–  Now unlock the rear connector from engine control unit and pull it off.
Installing
Install in reverse order to dismantling, noting the following:
–  After installation, the locking plate must be re-fitted on the engine control unit -J623-.
–  Remove the remains of the threadlocker from the breakaway bolt holes. The threads can be cleaned with a thread tap.
–  Always use new shear bolts.
–  Install the cover of the plenum chamber → Cover of the plenum chamber: removing and installing ; Rep. gr.55
–  Activate engine control unit via vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system -VAS 505X- in „Guided Functions“ mode, „Replace engine control unit“.
–  Take vehicle for a test drive.
