Check the fuel pressure and retaining pressure in front of the high pressure pump: check
Check the fuel pressure and retaining pressure in front of the high pressure pump: check
Special tools and workshop equipment required

t  K-Jetronic pressure tester -V.A.G 1318-
t  Fuel-resistant measuring container
Test prerequisites
l  Battery voltage min. 12.5 V
l  Fuel filter, OK.
l  Fuel tank at least. 1/4 full.
l  Fuel pump control unit -J538- in good condition; check.
l  Ignition switched off
Checking sequence
  WARNING
Fuel system is under pressure! Use protective goggles and clothing to prevent injuries and contact with the skin. Before opening the system place a cloth around the connection. Then release pressure by carefully loosening the connection.
  W00-0577
–  Separate the fuel supply line -arrow-; to do this pull release button.
–  Screw connector -V.A.G 1318/23- and adapter set -V.A.G 1318/17A- onto K-Jetronic pressure tester -V.A.G 1318-.
  A24-10452
–  Fit adapter set -V.A.G 1318/17A- onto the disconnected fuel supply line.
–  Insert the auxiliary hose into a graduated container -arrow-.
  A20-1122
–  Close cut-off valve on K-Jetronic pressure tester -V.A.G 1318-. The tap should be perpendicular to the direction of flow -arrow-.
–  Connect vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system -VAS 5051B-.
–  Press buttons on touch screen for »Vehicle self-diagnosis«, then »Engine electronics«, then »Final control diagnosis«.
–  Press the right-hand side button on the display until the fuel pump electronic actuator diagnosis is selected.
–  The fuel pump must run.
–  Read off fuel pressure on K-Jetronic pressure tester -V.A.G 1318-.
l  Specification: approx. 6 bars (3 to 7 bars) overpressure
If specification is not obtained:
–  Fuel pump: Checking delivery rate → Fuel supply (diesel engines); Rep. gr.20.
Checking residual pressure
–  Check system for leaks and check residual pressure by watching the drop in pressure on the K-Jetronic pressure tester -V.A.G 1318-.
l  After 10 minutes pressure should still be at least 3 bar.
If the residual pressure drops below 3 bar:
t  Check the screw connection between the K-Jetronic pressure tester -V.A.G 1318- and fuel supply line for leaks.
t  Check K-Jetronic pressure tester -V.A.G 1318- for leaks.
t  Check fuel lines and their connections for leaks.
t  Replace the fuel filter with the integrated fuel pressure regulator → Fuel supply - diesel engines; Rep. gr.20. Then, repeat the test.
t  Once the fuel filter is okay, replace the fuel pump → Fuel supply - diesel engines; Rep. gr.20.
Assembly is carried out in the reverse order to removal; note the following:
–  Ignition must be switched off.
  Note
  N24-0618
Before removing the pressure gauge, reduce pressure by opening cut-off tap. To do this keep the auxiliary hose in the graduated container -arrow-.
  A24-10479
–  Reconnect the fuel supply pipe -arrow- (make sure that it is clean and tight).
