Removing and installing camshaft timing chain
Removing and installing camshaft timing chain

Special tools and workshop equipment required
t  Hose clamp -T10060A-, see equivalent → Anchor
t  Assembly tool -T10352- and assembly tool -T10352/1-, see equivalent → Anchor
t  Hose clamp -T10355-, see equivalent → Anchor
t  Hose clamp -T40011-, see equivalent → Anchor
t  Torque wrench -VAG 1331-, see equivalent → Anchor.
t  Torque wrench -VAG 1332-, see equivalent → Anchor.

   
t  Adjustment tool -T40098-, please see Correspondence → Anchor

Removing
–  Move the lock carrier plate into service position without removing the charged air and coolant hoses → Rep. gr.50.
–  Remove timing chain cover (top) → Chapter.
  Caution
The control valve has a left hand side thread.

–  Remove the control valve using the assembly tool -T10352- or assembly tool -T10352/1- in the -direction of the arrow- depending on the version.

–  Unscrew the bolts -arrows- and remove the subframe.

–  Turn the vibration damper to „TDC“ position -arrow- using counterhold tool -T10355-.
l  Notch on vibration damper must align with arrow marking on cover for timing chains (bottom).
l  The markings -1- on the camshafts must face upwards.

–  Attach the retaining tool -T20208- and block the camshaft turning.
l  The marks of the camshafts should coincide with the marks on the counterhold -T20208-.

t  When necessary, turn the intake camshaft in the -direction of arrow A- using a wrench until the markings on the camshaft and on the support tool -T20208- correspond with each other.
t  This figure is used as an instruction, being a requirement that the support tool -T20208- is mounted and that the sprocket in the camshaft is not blocked.
–  Remove the lower cover of the distribution chain → Chapter.

–  Press the oil-pump chain tensioner in the -direction of the arrow- and immobilise it with the locking pin -T40011-.
–  Remove oil pump chain tensioner -1-.
–  Remove oil pump chain.

–  Insert scriber or suitable screwdriver in hole of chain tensioner in direction of -arrow 1- and lift locking element for chain tensioner.
–  Press tensioning rail for timing chain in direction of -arrow 2- and lock in place using locking pin -T40011-.
–  Detach camshaft timing chain from cylinder head.
  Note
Inlet camshaft will move in direction of engine rotation.

–  Remove tensioning rail for timing chain -2-.
–  Remove guide rail for camshaft timing chain -1-.
–  Remove timing chain.
Installing
l  Tightening torque → Chapter
  Note
t  The painted links of the distribution chain should be positioned in the marks of the pinions.
t  The play of the chain should be between the exhaust camshaft and the crankshaft, to be taken up when the chain tensor is released.

–  Fit the distribution chain over the camshaft pinions observing the marks.
–  Fit the distribution chain over the crankshaft observing the mark.

–  Fit tensioning rail for timing chain and tighten bolt -2-.

–  Mount the top guide rail -3-.
–  Fit the chain of the oil pump to the crankshaft → Item.
–  Remove the clamp -T40011- so that the chain is tensed.
–  Extract the counterhold -T20208-.

–  Fit the sub-frame and tighten the bolts -arrows- by hand.
–  Tighten the bolts -arrows- of the sub-frame, tightening torques → Chapter.
The remaining installation steps are carried out in the reverse sequence. Note the following points:
–  Fit the lower cover of the distribution chain → Chapter.
–  Install timing chain cover (top) → Chapter.
–  Install Poly V-belt tension device → Chapter.
–  Install poly V-belt → Chapter.
–  Put the lock carrier plate into service position → Rep. gr.50.
