Checking residual pressure in fuel system (up to high-pressure pump)
Checking residual pressure in fuel system (up to high-pressure pump)
Special tools and workshop equipment required
   
t  K-Jetronic pressure tester -V.A.G 1318-
t  Measuring container, fuel-resistant
t  Protective gloves
Test requirements
l  Battery voltage at least 12.5 V.
l  Fuel filter OK.
l  Fuel tank at least 1/4 full.
l  Fuel pump control unit -J538- OK.
l  Ignition switched off
Checking fuel pressure
–  Remove rear bench seat → Rep. gr.72.

–  Disconnect fuel pipe -2- by pulling release ring -1-.

–  Screw connector -V.A.G 1318/23- and adapter -V.A.G 1318/17-1- onto K-Jetronic tester -V.A.G 1318-.
–  Fit adapter -V.A.G 1318/17-1- onto the disconnected fuel supply pipe.
–  Screw the adapter -V.A.G 1318/11- onto the K-Jetronic tester -V.A.G 1318-.
–  Fit test hose -arrow- onto pressure tester and hold end of hose into a container to catch escaping fuel.

–  Close cut-off tap on pressure gauge.
l  Lever set at right angles to direction of flow -arrow-
–  Connect a diagnosis tester.
–  Select „Engine electronics“ in vehicle self-diagnosis.
–  Then select „Final control diagnosis“.
–  Select „Fuel pump electronics“ from list and press „start“.
  Note
This function actuates the fuel pump.
–  Read off fuel pressure on K-Jetronic pressure tester -V.A.G 1318-.
l  Specification: 5 to 8 bar
–  End this function when fuel pressure stops rising on K-Jetronic pressure tester -V.A.G 1318-.
If specification is not obtained:
–  Check fuel delivery rate of individual fuel pumps → Chapter.
Checking residual pressure
–  Check system for leaks and check residual pressure by watching the drop in pressure on the K-Jetronic pressure tester -V.A.G 1318-.
l  After 10 minutes there should be a minimum residual pressure of 3 bar.
If the retention pressure drops below 3 bar:
t  Check the screw connection between the pressure tester and the fuel line for leaks.
t  Check pressure tester for leaks.
t  Check the fuel lines and their connections for leaks.
t  Check delivery rate of fuel pump → Chapter.
t  Renew the fuel filter with integrated fuel pressure regulator → Chapter.
t  Non-return valve of fuel pump is defective → Chapter.
Installation is carried out in the reverse sequence; note the following:
–  Switch ignition OFF.
  Note
Before detaching the pressure gauge, dissipate the fuel pressure by opening the cut-off valve. Hold a container under the connection.

–  Reconnect fuel supply pipe -arrow- (make sure that all parts are clean).
  Note
Check fuel system for leaks .
