Engine: fitting
Installation is carried out in the reverse sequence; note the following:
  Caution
When doing any repair work, especially in the engine compartment, pay attention to the following due to the cramped conditions:
t  Route all the various lines (e.g. for fuel, hydraulics, active carbon filter system, coolant, refrigerant, brake fluid and vacuum pipes and hoses) and electrical wiring so that the original positions are restored.
t  To avoid damage to lines/wiring, ensure sufficient clearance to all moving or hot components.
–  Use new dowel sleeves to centre the engine/gearbox assembly in the cylinder block.
   
–  Hook intermediate plate onto sealing flange and slide onto dowel sleeves -arrows-.
Vehicles with manual gearbox:
–  Lubricate the control camshaft gears slightly with lubricant -G 000 100-.
–  Check and install the clutch and clutch control → Manual gearbox; Rep. gr.30.
All vehicles (continued):
–  When mounting the engine / gearbox, ensure that there is sufficient free space in relation to the subframe as well as the radiator.
–  Align the engine position tension free by carrying out shaking moments or, if necessary, release the engine mount on the assembly.
–  Install pendulum support.

t  Engine assembly mounting tightening torques → Chapter
t  Electrical connections and routing: → Electrical system; Rep. gr.97.
–  Fit the front section of the exhaust pipe.
–  Install the right and left hand side drive shafts: → Running gear, axles, steering; Rep. gr.40.
Vehicles with manual gearbox:
–  Fit the gear selection mechanism and adjust, if necessary → Manual gearbox; Rep. gr.34
–  Fit the hydraulic clutch slave cylinder → Manual gearbox; Rep. gr.30.
Vehicles with automatic Gearbox:
–  Fit the selector lever control cable and adjust, if necessary → Automatic gearbox 02E; Rep. gr.37
Vehicles with four wheel drive:
–  Connect the front section of the cardan shaft → 0AV and OBR axle drive; Rep. gr.39.
All vehicles (continued):
–  Fit the lock carrier, → Bodywork, exterior fitting work; Rep. gr.50.
–  Fit the central soundproofing pan → bodywork, exterior fitting work; Rep. gr.50.
–  Remove the front panel of the plenum chamber → bodywork, exterior fitting work; Rep. gr.50.
–  Fill up coolant → Chapter.
–  Connect battery → Electrical system; Rep. gr.27.
–  Adjust the engine control unit → Vehicle diagnostic tester„Guided operation“.
–  Carry out a test drive and then interrogate the event memory .
