Draining
  Note
t  The drained coolant must be collected in a clean container, whether for disposal or recycling.
t  Observe relevant disposal regulations.
  WARNING
Steam may be released when opening the expansion tank. Wear safety goggles and appropriate clothing to avoid injury to eyes and burns. Cover the cap with a cloth and open carefully.
–  Open cap on coolant expansion tank.

–  Release the fasteners -1 and 2- to remove the central soundproofing sump.
  A10-10761
–  Remove the air conduit guard -Pos. 1 and 2-.
  Note
t  Cove the intake of the charged air cooler with a clean cloth to prevent coolant from entering.
  A21-10051
t  Collect drained coolant in a clean container for re-use or disposal.
–  Place drip tray for workshop cranes -VAS 6208- beneath engine.
–  Disconnect coolant hose -arrow- from under radiator and drain off coolant.
  Note
Disregard: -Pos. 2-.
  A19-10404
–  Disconnect the lower coolant hose to the coolant recycling pump -V51--arrow- and allow coolant to flow out.
Filling
  Note
t  With the range of models later than 2008, only G 12 plus anti-freeze agent must be used according to standard TL VW 774 G.
t  The range of models up to and including 2007 can use Gº12º plus anti-freeze agent, according to TLºVWº774ºF and Gº12º plus-plus, according to TLºVWº774ºG.
t  The coolant additive G 12 plus-plus can be mixed with the previous coolant additive G 12 plus. Identification: both are coloured purple.
t  „TLºVWº774ºG“ or „TLºVWº774ºF“ anti-freeze agents prevent damage from rust, freezing or lime sediment, and also raise the boiling point of the coolant. For these reasons, the cooling system must be filled all year round with an anti-freeze and anti-corrosion agent.
t  Thanks to this rise in the boiling point, the coolant guarantees good running, even when the engine undergoes heavy strain, especially in countries with tropical climates.
t  The antifreeze protection must be guaranteed to approx. - 25 ºC (down to approx. -35 ℃ in countries with arctic climate).
t  The concentration of the coolant must not be reduced by adding water in summer or in countries with hot climates. The amount of anti-freeze in the coolant must be at least 40 %.
t  If the climate requires a stronger anti-freeze, the anti-freeze agent can be increased, but only up to 60% (anti-freeze protection down to approx. -40ºC). If the proportion is greater, the cooling and anti-freeze protection capacity is reduced.
t  The refractometer -T10007- is recommended for determining the current anti-freeze density.
t  If radiator, heat exchanger, cylinder head or cylinder head gasket has been replaced, do not reuse old coolant.

1) The quantity of coolant can vary depending upon the vehicle specifications.
2) Always use clean tap water.
–  Fit the lower coolant hose to the radiator-arrow-.

–  Connect bottom coolant hose -1- to radiator.
  A19-10404
–  Connect the coolant hose to the continued circulation coolant pump -V51--arrow-.
  A19-10405
With cooling system filler -VAS 6096-:
–  Fill the reservoir of -VAS 6096- with at least 10 litres of premixed coolant (according to recommended ratio → Anchor).
–  Fit adapter for cooling system tester -V.A.G 1274/8- onto coolant expansion tank.
–  Attach cooling system charge unit -VAS 6096- to adapter -V.A.G 1274/8-.
–  Run vent hose -1- into a small container -2-.
  Note
The vented air draws along a small amount of coolant, which should be collected.
–  Close both valves -A- and -B- (turn lever at right angles to direction of flow).
–  Connect hose -3- to compressed air.
l  Pressure: 6 ... 10 bar of pressure.
  A19-0351
–  Open valve -B- by setting lever in direction of flow.
l  The suction jet pump generates a partial vacuum in the cooling system; the needle on the gauge should move into the green zone.
–  Also briefly open valve -A- (turn lever in direction of flow) so that hose on reservoir of -VAS 6096- can fill with coolant.
–  Close valve -A- again.
–  Leave valve -B- open for another 2 minutes.
l  The suction jet pump continues to generate a partial vacuum in the cooling system; the needle on the gauge should remain in the green zone.
–  Close valve -B-.
l  The needle on the gauge should stop in the green zone. The vacuum level in the cooling system is then sufficient for subsequent filling.
  Note
t  If the needle does not reach the green zone, repeat the process.
t  Check cooling system for leaks if the vacuum is not maintained.
–  Disconnect the compressed air hose.
–  Open valve -A-.
l  The vacuum in the cooling system causes the coolant to be drawn out of the reservoir of -VAS 6096-; the cooling system is then filled.
  A19-0353
–  Check the coolant level.
–  Top up coolant to „max“ mark.
–  Start engine and run for 2 minutes (maximum) at approx. 1500 rpm.
–  Top up coolant to overflow hole on expansion tank with engine running.
–  Close filler cap on coolant expansion tank.
–  Start engine and run at approx. 3000 rpm until radiator fan cuts in.
  WARNING
Steam may be released when opening the expansion tank. Wear safety goggles and appropriate clothing to avoid injury to eyes and burns. Cover the cap with a cloth and open carefully.
–  Check the coolant level.
l  When the engine is at normal operating temperature, coolant level must be at „max“ mark, when engine is cold it must be between „min“ and „max“ marks.
–  Top up with coolant again if necessary.
–  Switch off the engine.
Without cooling system charge unit -VAS 6096-:
  A19-0480
–  Gradually add coolant until the top mark on the shaded area of the expansion tank is reached.
–  Close expansion tank.
–  Start the engine and keep the engine speed at approx. 2000 rpm for approx. 3 minutes.
–  Allow engine to run until fan starts up.
  WARNING
Steam may be released when opening the expansion tank. Wear safety goggles and appropriate clothing to avoid injury to eyes and burns. Cover the cap with a cloth and open carefully.
–  Check coolant level and top up any missing coolant, if necessary. When the engine is at normal operating temperature, the coolant filling level must be at the top mark, and when the engine is cold, in the middle of the shaded area.
