Checking current consumption
–  Remove the rear seat bench → bodywork - interior fitting work; Rep. gr.72.
   
–  Remove the cover -1- of the fuel delivery unit together with the fuel pump control unit -J538--2-.

–  First check that the connector -arrow- is fitted securely by pulling the connector without pressing the catch. The connector can cause a fault if it has not been fitted correctly.
–  Unplug connector -arrow-.
–  Check the contacts on the connector and on the fuel delivery unit for damage.

–  Connect the adapter for the DSO measuring/oscilloscope module (5 contacts) -VAS 5565-to the connector in the fuel supply unit.
–  Connect the ammeter clip -A-to the red cable marked „Stromzange (ammeter clip)“ on theDSO (5 contact) adapter for the measuring/oscilloscope module -VAS 5565-.
–  Start engine and run at idling speed.
–  Measure the power consumption of the fuel pump:
l  Specification: 9 Amps maximum
  Note
t  The starting current of the fuel pump can be more than the specification for a short period when starting the motor.
t  If there is a temporary fuel system fault, the check can also be carried out during a test drive, with the help of a second person.
If the current draw is exceeded:
–  Fuel pump is defective, renew fuel delivery unit → Chapter.
