Removing
  Note
t  In this engine the camshafts are housed in a casing. Before removing camshaft housing, first remove valve timing housing.
t  Distribution housing: removing and fitting → Chapter
t  The camshaft housing sealing surface must not be reworked.
–  First check whether a coded radio is fitted. Check the anti-theft code in this case.
–  Remove the earth wire of the battery when the ignition is turned off and lay to the side.
–  Remove air cleaner housing → Chapter.
–  Unscrew the screw → Item and remove the air filter housing upwards.
–  Drain coolant → Chapter
  W00-0427
–  Remove the coolant hose from the hose clip -arrow-.
–  Unscrew the securing screws and remove the sealing cover of the camshaft -1-.
–  Remove turbocharger → Chapter.
–  Remove valve timing housing → Chapter.
–  Turn crankshaft to TDC no. 1 cylinder. Then turn crankshaft back 45° against engine direction and remove camshaft timing sprockets with timing chain → Chapter
–  Unbolt camshaft sealing covers.
–  Pull connectors off fuel pressure sender for low-pressure -G410- and off high-pressure pump.
–  Unscrew earth cable from camshaft housing.
–  Remove ignition coils. To do so, use the socket -T10094A- → Chapter.
–  Remove cable guide with wiring harness from camshaft housing.
  N15-10225
–  Release connector -2- and pull off.
–  Remove oil pressure switch -F1--1-.
  WARNING
Fuel supply line is pressurised. Wear eye protection and gloves to avoid injuries and skin contact. Before loosening hose connections, wrap a cloth around the connection. Then eliminate the pressure by carefully separating the pipe.
  N15-10696
–  Pull connector and fuel supply line -arrows- off high-pressure pump.
  N15-10479
–  Remove the wiring guide -2- and separate the plug connection -4- from the Hall sender -G40-.
  Note
Immobilise the bolted unions of the high pressure pump and the lower body of the intake manifold when loosening the connection bolts with a screwdriver.
–  Loosen union nuts -1- and -3- of high-pressure line.
–  Pull out oil dipstick.
–  Remove lower part of intake manifold → Chapter.
–  Unbolt left lifting eye.
–  Loosen camshaft housing bolts from outside to inside, alternately and diagonally and remove.
–  Carefully lift camshaft housing off.
Fitting
  Caution
The studs (M6x80) must be screwed into cylinder head before installing camshaft housing.
The camshaft housing is guided by the studs, so that the roller rocker fingers do not slip off the supporting elements.
Requirements:
l  Pistons must not be at TDC.
–  Remove sealant residues from cylinder head and camshaft housing with a rotating brush, e.g. a hand drill with a plastic brush (wear eye protection).
–  Clean sealing surfaces carefully. They must be free of oil and grease.
–  Also prevent dirt and residual sealant from entering cylinder head.
  N15-10478
–  Turn the intake and exhaust camshafts until the adjustment tool -T10171A- is able to fully enter the openings in the camshafts.
–  Hand thread (without tightening ) an M6 bolt to secure the adjustment tool -T10171A-.
  Note
Camshaft housings with different sealing variants in area of spark plug recess have been fitted.
Sealing on cylinder head with no sealing ring in area of spark plug recess
  Caution
No sealant is applied in area of the oil strainer -1-.
  N15-10370
–  Apply thin, even coat of sealant on clean camshaft housing sealing surface. See hatched area in illustration.
  Note
The sealant must not be applied too thickly otherwise excess sealant could enter the oil channels and cause damage to the engine.
Sealing on cylinder head with sealing ring in area of spark plug recess
–  Place new seals into grooves in cylinder head.
  Caution
No sealant is applied in area of the oil strainer -1-.
  N15-10520
–  Apply thin, even coat of sealant on clean camshaft housing sealing surface. See hatched area in illustration.
–  Do not apply sealant in area of -arrows-.
Sealing on cylinder head with machined chamfer in area of spark plug recess
  Caution
No sealant is applied in area of the oil strainer -1-.
  N15-10521
–  Apply thin, even coat of sealant -D 154 103 A1- on clean camshaft housing sealing surface. See hatched area in illustration.
–  Apply sealant -D 176 600 A1- to the chamfer -arrows- of the cylinder head.
The sealant bead must be 2 mm thick.
  Note
The sealant must not be applied too thickly otherwise excess sealant could enter the oil channels and cause damage to the engine.
  N15-10521
–  Ensure that all roller rocker fingers contact valve stem ends -1- correctly and that they are clipped into their respective support elements -2-.
–  Bolt two studs (M6 x 80) on the cylinder head before fitting the camshaft housing.
  N15-0076
–  Carefully fit camshaft housing vertically onto studs -arrows- and dowel pins from above.
  Note
Ensure that no oil residue can drip onto sealing surfaces.
–  Evenly tighten new camshaft housing securing bolts from inside to outside alternately and diagonally.
Ensure that camshaft housing is not canted. Tightening torque: 10 Nm +1/4 turn further (90º)
  Note
After installing the camshaft housing, wait about 30 minutes for the sealant to dry.
–  Adjust valve timing → Chapter.
Continue installation following reverse order for removing. Note the following:
t  Distribution housing: Installing → Chapter.
t  Install turbocharger → Chapter.
t  Install crankshaft pulley → Chapter.
t  Fit the fuel lines → Chapter.
t  Replace the seals of the camshaft covers and lubricate with oil before assembly.
t  Continue installation following reverse order for removing.
