Removing and installing fuel tank
Removing and installing fuel tank

Consult the equivalence table for tools and equipment according to applicability among Seat / VW / Audi / Skoda → Chapter.
Special tools and workshop equipment required
   
t  Torque wrench -VAG 1331-, see equivalent → Anchor.

Removing
–  Note safety precautions before starting work → Chapter
–  Remove the earth wire of the battery when the ignition is turned off and lay to the side.
–  Unscrew securing bolts and remove tank flap unit.
–  Drain fuel tank, clean fuel filler and surrounding area. → Chapter
–  Fold rear seat forwards.
–  Remove cover from fuel delivery unit.

–  Disconnect connector -1-.
–  Remove right rear wheel.
–  Remove rear right-hand side wheel housing liner. → Bodywork, exterior fitting work; Rep. gr.66

–  Remove the pressure retention valve -1- and the vent pipe -2- (press safety ring).

–  Unscrew the securing bolt -arrow-.
–  Unbolt filler neck from body.
–  Unscrew all rear exhaust system retainers from body. Then support lowered exhaust system on body with wire.
–  Remove the lower heat protection plate of the fuel tank.
–  Remove the rear axle: → Running gear, axles, steering; Rep. gr.42.
  WARNING
Fuel supply line is pressurised. Wear eye protection and gloves to avoid injuries and skin contact. Before loosening hose connections, wrap a cloth around the connection. Then eliminate the pressure by carefully separating the pipe.

–  Disconnect the breather pipe -1- (white) and the fuel pipe -2- (black) at their connections.
  Note
Press in safety wedge to release fuel lines.

–  Unscrew the securing screws of the tank -arrows- and the tensioning belt of the tank. In doing so, support the fuel tank using the engine and gearbox jack -VAG 1383A-.
–  Lower fuel tank.
Installing
Install in reverse order to dismantling, noting the following:
t  Breather and fuel hoses are to be installed kink-free.
t  Secure hoses with spring-clips.
t  Do not confuse supply pipes with return or breather pipes.

t  Check the connections on the active carbon filter.
t  Fit rear axle → Running gear; Rep. gr.42
  Note
After installing fuel tank, check that the supply, return and breather lines are still clipped onto the fuel tank.
