Supply and operation of voltage: verification
Test conditions
l  Fuse no. 18, OK.
l  Battery voltage at least 11.5 V.
Checking proces
  Note
To carry out this work the battery earth strap must be disconnected. The vehicle should be checked for a fitted radio. If necessary, obtain the anti-theft code for the radio first.
–  Turn the ignition on. The fuel pump should operate for a brief moment and can be heard (for a repetition of the test, wait at least 10 seconds).
  Note
For commercial vehicles, pay special attention to the perception of pump operation.
–  Switch ignition off.
If the fuel pump does not run:
   
–  Pull out the relay -J17- for the fuel pump from the relay plate with the fuse holder (position12).
  Note
If the relay cannot be separated from the relay plate without the use of tools then the earth strap of the battery should first be disconnected.
–  Connect remote control -V.A.G 1348/3A- with adapter cable -V.A.G 1348/3-2- to contact 4 to fuel pump and battery positive (+).
–  Operate remote control -V.A.G 1348/3A- for approx.
Fuel pump runs:
–  Check activation of fuel pump relay -J17- according to electrical diagram: → Current flow diagrams, Electrical fault finding and Fitting locations.
Fuel pump does not run:
Commercial vehicles
–  Separate partially the forward part of the carpet in the load bay.

–  Remove the floor protection plates -3-.
–  Remove the reinforcement beam.
Kombi versions
–  Move rear seat forward.
Continued for all vehicles
–  Remove the cover from the fuel supply unit.

–  Remove the 4-pin connector -1- from the fuel supply unit flange -2-.
–  Connect diode test lamp -V.A.G 1527B- with aux. cables from -V.A.G 1594A- or -V.A.G 1594C- to the outer contacts of the connector.
–  Operate remote control.
   The LED must light up.
LED does not light up:
–  Locate and eliminate open circuit using current flow diagram: → Current flow diagrams, Electrical fault finding and Fitting locations.
LED lights up (voltage supply OK.):
  N20-0039
–  Remove union nut with spanner -U-40055A-.
–  Check that the electrical wires between flange and fuel pump are connected.
If no open circuit can be found:
–  Fuel pump defective, replace fuel delivery unit → Chapter, Fuel delivery unit: removing and fitting.
