Draining off
  WARNING
When the engine is warm, the cooling system is under pressure!
Hot steam/hot coolant can escape - risk of scalding.
Cover filler cap on coolant expansion tank with a cloth and open carefully to dissipate pressure.
–  Open filler cap from expansion tank.
–  Remove engine splash guard or noise insulation → General body repairs, exterior; Rep. gr.50.

–  Pull coolant hose from bottom of radiator.
  Note
Please observe requirements for disposal.
Topping up and bleeding
  Note
An influencing factor of the effectiveness of the coolant is the amount of water used. With respect to the contents that may vary from country to country, or even region to region, Volkswagen has made the decision to define the quality of the water that is used for the cooling system. Purified water fulfils all requirements. For this reason, purified water should be mixed with the coolant whenever an older model's coolant is toped up or replaced. On newer vehicles (production year 2010 ►), the use of purified water is absolutely essential.
  Caution
It is only permissible to use distilled water for mixing with G12 plus-plus. The use of distilled water ensures optimum protection against corrosion.
  Note
t  Only use coolant additive G 12 plusplus in accordance with TL VW 774 G
t  It is only permissible to use distilled water for mixing.
t  G 12 plus-plus prevents frost and corrosion damage, formation of scaling and raises the boiling point of coolant. Therefore, the cooling system must be filled all year round with coolant additive and corrosion protection additive.
t  Thanks to this rise in the boiling point, the coolant guarantees good running, even when the engine undergoes heavy strain, especially in countries with tropical climates.
t  The antifreeze protection must be guaranteed to approx. - 25 ºC (down to approx. -35 ℃ in countries with arctic climate).
t  The concentration of the coolant must not be reduced by adding water in summer or in countries with hot climates. The amount of anti-freeze in the coolant must be at least 40 %.
t  If, for climatic reasons, greater antifreeze protection is needed, the percentage of G 12 plus can be increased, but only up to 60% (antifreeze protection to -40 °C). If the proportion is greater, the cooling and anti-freeze protection capacity is reduced.
t  If radiator, heat exchanger, cylinder head or cylinder head gasket has been replaced, do not reuse old coolant.

1)  Coolant quantity may vary depending on the vehicle equipment

–  Push coolant hose on at bottom of radiator and secure with clip.
–  Install engine splash guard or noise insulation → General body repairs, exterior; Rep. gr.50.
With cooling system charge unit -VAS 6096-
–  Fill the coolant circuit using the filling equipment -VAS 6096-. → Instructions for handling the cooling system filling equipment VAS 6096
  N19-10327
–  Fill up with coolant to approx. 3 cm above „max.“.
–  Close expansion tank.
Vehicles with air conditioner
–  Switch off air conditioner.
All other vehicles continued
–  Heating temperature control to „max“.
–  Detach connector of sensor for gas rail -G401- from gas rail.
–  Start the engine. Let the engine run for about 3 minutes at approx. 2000 rpm.
–  Allow engine to run until fan starts up.

–  Open breather valve -arrow- until residual air has escaped.
–  Close venting valve.
–  Check coolant level and top up any missing coolant, if necessary. If the engine is at running temperature, the coolant level should be at MAX; if the engine is cold, between the MIN and MAX marks.
