  Note!
To carry out this work the battery earth strap must be disconnected. The vehicle should be checked for a fitted radio. If necessary obtain radio anti-theft code first.
–  Move rear seat forward.
–  Remove the fuel delivery unit cover underneath the rear seat.
–  Turn the ignition on. The fuel pump should be heard to start (if the test has to be repeated, wait for at least ten seconds).
If the fuel pump does not run:
–  Switch ignition off.
–  Remove cover from fuse holder.
–  Remove fuse no. 41 from the fuse holder.
   
–  Connect remote control -V.A.G 1348/3A- with Adapter -SAT 1348/3-3- to contact 41a to fuel pump and battery positive terminal (+).
–  Operate remote control.
Fuel pump runs:
–  Check activation of fuel pump relay -J17-: → VAS 5051; Vehicle self-diagnosis.
Fuel pump does not run:
–  Pull 4-pin connector from fuel tank flange.

–  Connect multimeter -V.A.G 1715- using auxiliary cables from -V.A.G 1594A- or -V.A.G 1594 C- to the outer contacts of the connector.
–  Operate remote control.
Specification: about the battery voltage.
If the ideal value is not measured:
–  Locate and eliminate the short circuit following the current flow diagrams.
If the specification is obtained (voltage supply OK.):
  A20-0099
–  Place tool -U-40055A- on union nut and unscrew it from the flange.
–  Check that the electrical wires between flange and fuel pump are connected.
If no open circuit can be found:
–  Replace fuel delivery unit → Chapter.
