Coolant thermostat: removing and fitting

Special tools and workshop equipment required
   
t  Counterhold -T20174- or Pliers -T20029-, see equivalent → Anchor

t  Hose clamp -T20167-, see equivalent → Anchor
Removing
  WARNING
Observe safety precautions when disconnecting the battery → Electrical system; Rep. Gr.27.
–  Disconnect earth wire at battery with ignition switched off.
–  Drain coolant → Chapter.

Fuel filter, version 1:
–  Extract the fuel filter along with the hoses connected to above the support -arrow- and remove to one side.

Fuel filter, version 2:
–  Loosen the bolt by one turn -1-.
–  Unscrew bolt -2- and nut -3-.
–  Leave the fuel filter to one side with the flexible hoses.

Before removing the ribbed belt, mark its direction of rotation with chalk or with a felt tipped pen. If the belt runs in the opposite direction when it is refitted, this can cause it to rupture.
–  Slacken ribbed belt, turn tensioning element in -direction of arrow-.

–  Lock tensioner with retention tool -T20167-.
–  Remove the ribbed belt.

–  Loosen the alternator -arrows- and secure to the right hand side. The pipes remain connected.

–  Disconnect the coolant hose -2- from the connection sleeve.
–  Disconnect electrical connection -1- from the fuel temperature sender -G81-.
–  Unscrew bolts -arrows- and take connection sleeve out.

–  Turn coolant thermostat -item 1- approx. 90° (1/4 turn) anti-clockwise and remove it from the connecting support.
–  Remove O-ring -2-.
Fitting
Installation is carried out in the reverse order of removing, when doing this note the following.
  Note
Replace the O-ring.
–  Clean or smoothen the contact surface for O-ring.
–  Fit the coolant thermostat with the new O-ring.
l  Fitting position: The thermostat retainer should be in a vertical position.
–  Moisten new O-ring with coolant additive “G12+”.
–  Install poly V-belt → Chapter.
–  Connect battery. Note the following. → Electrical system; Rep. Gr.27.
–  Fill up coolant → Chapter.
