Test condition
–  Observe safety precautions → Chapter.
–  Observe rules for cleanliness → Chapter.
–  Seal all open lines immediately after disconnecting.
–  Note connections on activated charcoal filter → Fig..
l  Ignition must be switched off.
Checking sequence

–  Unlock and disconnect breather line -2- (white). Separate push-on couplings → Chapter.
  N20-10937
–  Connect hand vacuum pump -VAS 6213- with adapter set -VAS 6550/3- to line -1- leading to activated charcoal filter.
  N20-10961
–  Move slide ring -1- on hand vacuum pump -VAS 6213- to position -A- for „vacuum“.
–  Operate hand vacuum pump -VAS 6213- several times. Vacuum must not build up.
If a vacuum builds up:
  N24-10282
–  Open tank flap.
–  Remove cap -arrow- from fuel filler neck.
–  Clean area around fuel filler neck.
–  Drain fuel tank → Chapter.
–  Remove tank flap unit → General body repairs, exterior; Rep. gr.55.
–  Remove bench seat → General body repairs, interior; Rep. gr.72.
  A20-1068
–  Unclip cover -1- at retaining tabs -arrows-, using removal wedge -3409-.
  A20-10835
–  Release connector -1- and unplug.
–  Remove rear right wheel → Wheels, tyres, wheel alignment; Rep. gr.44.
  N20-10928
–  Unscrew bolts -arrows- of filler neck -1- from body structure.
  N20-10927
–  Position engine and gearbox jack -V.A.G 1383 A- below vehicle to support tank.
  A20-10843
–  Unscrew bolts -arrows- on fuel tank -1-.
–  Lower fuel tank by 6 cm.
  Caution
Ensure that there is sufficient clearance to all components.
–  Check breather hose → Item on activated charcoal filter for soiling and clean if necessary.
–  Repeat check.
Checking for leaks.
  N20-10926
–  Loosen activated charcoal filter -1- from retainer -3-.
–  Disengage locking lug -2- upwards in -direction of arrow A-.
–  Pull activated charcoal filter -1- in -direction of arrow B- out of retainer -3-.
  N20-10934
–  Disconnect lines from connections -T- → Item and -A- → Item. Separate push-on couplings → Chapter.
  N20-10939
–  Connect -T- and -A- by means of a standard hose -2-, in order to seal the connections.
  Note
Connection -T- can also be sealed with the sealing tool -T10249/2-. Connection -A- must then also be sealed using suitable means.
–  Operate hand vacuum pump -VAS 6213- several times. A vacuum must build up.
If a vacuum does not build up:
  N20-10935
Proceed as follows to check activated charcoal filter system at separating point on underbody:
–  Disconnect line -1- (white) on underbody. Separate push-on couplings → Chapter.
  N20-10938
–  Connect line to activated charcoal filter -1- with hand vacuum pump -VAS 6213-, adapter -VAS 6550/3-1- and a standard hose.
l  Connections -A- and -T- are sealed by means of a standard hose → Anchor.
–  Operate hand vacuum pump -VAS 6213- several times. A vacuum must build up.
If a vacuum builds up:
–  Check line between separating point in engine compartment and separating point on underbody. Renew, if necessary.
If a vacuum does not build up:
  N20-10952
–  Disconnect line from connection -M- of activated charcoal filter. Separate push-on couplings → Chapter.
  N20-10939
–  Connect hand vacuum pump -VAS 6213- with adapter -VAS 6550/3- to connection -M- of activated charcoal filter -1-.
–  Connect -T- and -A- by means of a standard hose -2-, in order to seal the connections.
–  Operate hand vacuum pump -VAS 6213- several times. A vacuum must build up.
If a vacuum builds up:
  N20-10935
–  Check line between separating point -1- (white) on underbody and connection -M- on activated charcoal filter. Renew, if necessary.
If a vacuum does not build up:
–  Renew activated charcoal filter → Chapter.
If vacuum builds up and lines are OK, proceed as follows:
Check activated charcoal filter system solenoid valve 1 -N80-. To do that, proceed as follows:
l  Ignition switched off
  N20-10938
–  Press in locking tabs -arrows- and remove intake connecting piece -1- in -direction of arrow-.
  N15-10721
–  Disconnect hose -1- at air cleaner housing.
–  Pull air filter housing upwards off studs at positions -2- and -3-.
  N15-10722
–  Seal line -3- between activated charcoal filter solenoid valve 1 -N80- and throttle valve module -J338-.
–  To do this, use hose clips up to 25 mm -3094-.
  N24-10785
–  Disconnect bleeder line -2- (white). Separate push-on couplings → Chapter.
–  Using a connecting nipple -VAS 6550/3-1- and a standard hose, connect hand vacuum pump -VAS 6213- to line leading to active charcoal filter system solenoid valve 1 -N80-.
–  Operate hand vacuum pump -VAS 6213- several times. A vacuum must build up.
If a vacuum does not build up:
–  Check lines and renew, if necessary.
If no fault is found:
–  Replace the activated charcoal filter system solenoid valve 1 -N80-.
Installation
Installation is in the reverse sequence of removal. Note the following:
–  Install fuel tank → Chapter.
t  Take installation position of earth connection into account → Fig.
t  Make sure that the filler neck of the fuel tank is correctly inserted into the opening in the body.
t  Use engine and gearbox jack -V.A.G 1383 A- to position fuel tank on underbody.
t  Ensure proper seating of activated charcoal filter in retainer on fuel tank.
t  Install breather and fuel lines free of kinks.
t  Ensure that line connections are tight.
t  After installing fuel tank, check that supply and breather lines are still clipped onto fuel tank.
