Gear change mechanism: checking
t  If the selector lever is in position“S”, “D” or “R” or even in Tiptronic mode, the starter motor should not be turned on
t  At speeds of over 5 km/h, when shifting the selector lever to position “N” the solenoid for locking the selector lever should not be engaged. The selector lever may be displaced to another gear
t  At speeds below 5 Km/h (vehicle nearly stopped), when the gear selector lever is changed to position “N” the electromagnet for locking the selector lever will engage the selector after about 1 second. The gear selector lever may only be moved from this position “N” if the brake pedal is pressed and held in
Selector lever in “P”, selector lever button pressed and ignition is on:
l  Brake in rest position:
If the button is kept pressed in, the selector lever remains locked and can not be taken out of position “P”. The selector lever locking solenoid locks the lever.
l  Brake pedal depressed:
The selector lever locking solenoid releases the lever. It is possible to select a series of gears. Starting from position“P” positions“R, N, D, S” should now be engaged slowly and consecutively, checking during the operation whether the position shown on the instrument panel coincides with the position of the selector lever.
Selector lever in “N”, selector lever button pressed and ignition is on:
l  Brake in rest position:
The gear selection lever is locked and cannot move from “N”position. The selector lever locking solenoid locks the lever.
l  Brake pedal depressed:
The selector lever locking solenoid releases the lever. It is possible to select a series of gears.
  Note
When the brake pedal is depressed it is also possible to shift from “N” to “D” without pressing the selector lever button. However to shift from “N” to “R” it is also necessary to press the selector lever button.
Selector lever in “D” and ignition on:
The selector lever is locked and it is not possible to shift from “D” to “S”.
l  Press the selector lever button:
The selector lever is released and it is possible to shift from “D” to “S”.
Selector lever in position “D”, ignition and lights switched on:
l  Put the selector lever in Tiptronic mode:
The symbol“D” should go out on the selector lever indicator and the symbols “+” and “-” should light up.
The selector lever position indicator on the instrument panel should change from “PRNDS” to “654321” on putting the selector lever in Tiptronic mode.
l  In Tiptronic mode, move the selector lever towards “+” and towards “-”:
The “PRNDS” indicator on the instrument panel should display a higher or lower gear accordingly when the selector lever is moved towards “+” or towards “-”.
