Special tools and workshop equipment required
t  Torque wrench kit -SAT 8010-
t  Special screwdriver T8 -T40056A-
t  Vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system -VAS 505X-
t  Lever -U30800-
t  Torque screwdriver -VAG 1624-

Removal:
–  To renew control unit, select the „Replacement“ function for the appropriate control unit in „Guided Functions“ mode → Vehicle diagnostic tester.
–  Disconnect battery → Chapter
–  Move steering wheel down and to rear as far as possible, making use of full range of steering column adjuster.
–  Remove airbag unit → Rep. gr.69.
–  Remove steering wheel → Rep. gr.48.
  Caution
Engage the airbag in order to prevent it from damaging when turned.
   
–  Clip-off the material -1- of the upper trim using the lever -U30800-.

–  Unscrew the screws -1- of the bottom trim using the T8 wrench -T40056A-.
–  Unscrew the screws -2- of the bottom trim using a Torx 25 screwdriver.

–  Remove the steering column -1- adjustment lever. Undo screw -3- using a screwdriver -2- (2.5 mm) for this purpose.

–  Remove the upper trim -1- of the steering column -arrow-.
–  Remove the lower trim -2- of the steering column -arrow-.

–  Unscrew the bolt -2-.
–  Unplug electrical connectors -1- and -3-.
  WARNING
Before disconnecting the electrical connector -4-, the mechanic must discharge static by briefly grasping hold of striker plate for door or similar.
–  Unplug the electrical connector -4-.

–  Press catch -1- in direction of -arrow- until connector -2- disengages.
–  Carefully detach steering column switch together with steering column electronics control unit -J527-.
Installing
Installation is carried out in reverse order, noting the following:
–  Make sure all fasteners and the electrical connectors are properly engaged.
–  Insert top trim for steering column switch in hooks for bottom trim, press both sections together and tighten bolts.
–  Install steering wheel → Rep. gr.48.
–  Install airbag unit → Rep. gr.69.
