Charging totally discharged battery with battery charger -VAS 5903-
  WARNING
Injury risk! Observe safety precautions → Chapter.
  WARNING
The batteries whose magic eye a clear yellow or clear colour should not be tested nor charged. Do not perform an auxillary start.
The risk of explosion exists upon testing and charging or performing an auxillary start.
These batteries must be renewed.
  Caution
t  The incorrect polarity protection is not active while „charging extremely discharged batteries/backup function“. Connect the charge clamps with the correct polarity to the terminals of the battery poles.
t  For the charge process the operation mode corresponding to the battery must be selected → Instructions Manual battery chargerVAS 5903.
t  The charger will not recognize an extremely discharged battery → Chapter.
t  Do not operate the START / STOP button if the charge clamps are connected incorrectly. The charger may be damaged.
The charger -VAS 5903- will not automatically recognize a battery if the voltage is less than 2 V.
Special tools and workshop equipment required
   
t  Battery charger -VAS 5903-
  Note
t  Note the instructions from Chapter → Chapter.
t  For vehicles that have not yet been registered, exhausted batteries must be replaced before being transferred. Previous influences cannot be exempted.
t  The battery must have a temperature of at least 10 °C.
–  Turn off the ignition and all electricity consumers.
–  Plug the charger into the mains. The previously selected mode will be shown on the screen → Chapter.

–  Select the operation mode corresponding to the battery using the INFO button.
The symbol -1- appears on the screen for the „wet battery service charge“ or the symbol -2- for the „standard gel battery / Absorbed glass mat battery service charge“.
–  Adjust the battery capacity (Ah) of the battery to be charged using the respective „Up“ or „Down“ buttons.
–  Connect the red charge clamp „+“ of the charger to the positive pole of the battery.
  Note
On vehicles with Start / Stop function and battery monitor control unit -J367-, the black charging terminal - must be connected to the body earthing. Connecting it to battery negative terminal will cause start/stop system to malfunction.
–  Connect the black charge terminal „-“ to the negative pole of the battery.
–  Press START / STOP for approx 5 seconds. The option charge „extremely low battery/backup function is activated“.
–  Press the respective „Up“ or „Down“ button, to adjust the respective battery voltage (6 V, 12 V or 24 V).
  Note
After five seconds if no button is pressed the charger returns to the main menu (select operation mode).
–  Confirm the voltage of the selected battery with START / STOP.
Then the system will check if the charge clamps have been connected with the correct polarity.
–  Ensure the correct polarity of the charge clamps.
–  Ensure the correct polarity of the charge clamps using the START / STOP button.
The charger will begin to charge the extremely low battery.
Finish charging the battery:
–  Press START / STOP.
–  Remove the black charge terminal „-“ of the charger from the negative pole of the battery.
–  Remove the red charge terminal „+“ of the charger from the positive pole of the battery.
–  Unplug the charger from the mains.
