Testing hydraulic bucket tappets |
Note t
| Always replace bucket tappet complete (cannot be adjusted or repaired). |
t
| Irregular valve noises when starting engine are normal. |
t
| After installing new bucket tappets, the engine must not be started for about 30 minutes. (Otherwise valves would strike the pistons), then turn the crankshaft fully twice. |
t
| After carrying out work on the valve gear, carefully crank engine at least 2 revolutions to ensure that no valve touches the piston when the engine is started. |
Special tools and workshop equipment required |
t
| Wooden or plastic wedge |
–
| Start engine and allow to run until the radiator fan has cut in once. |
–
| Increase engine speed to about 2500 rpm for 2 minutes. |
If the hydraulic bucket tappets are still loud, determine the faulty tappet as follows: |
–
| Turn the crankshaft clockwise at the central screw of the crankshaft timing belt sprocket until the cams of the bucket tappets to be tested are positioned on top. |
