Removing and installing cylinder head
Removing and installing cylinder head
Removing and installing timing belt → Chapter.
Testing compression pressure → Chapter.
  Note
t  When installing an exchange cylinder head with the camshaft installed, it is necessary to oil the contact surfaces between bucket tappets and the cam track after installing the head.
t  Do not remove the plastic bases supplied as a protection for the open valves until just before fitting on the cylinder head.
t  If the cylinder head is replaced, the system must be completely filled with fresh coolant.
t  It is not permissible to rework the cylinder heads of diesel engines.
   
1 - Cylinder head gasket
q   replace
q   Pay attention to the marking → Fig.
2 - 20 Nm
3 - Cylinder head
q   check for distortion → Fig.
q   Removing cylinder head → Chapter
q   Installing cylinder head → Chapter
q   after replacing fill entire system with fresh coolant
4 - Lifting eye
5 - Cylinder head bolt
q   replace
q   pay attention to order for slackening → Chapter
q   observe the order of tightening up → Chapter
6 - Oil deflector
q   up to 07.97
7 - Cylinder head cover
q   with vulcanized gasket
q   if the seal has been damaged replace cylinder head cover
8 - Collar
9 - Screw cap
q   Replace seal if damaged
10 - Ventilation tube
q   to air guide pipe
11 - Retaining clip
12 - Pressure control valve
q   to crankcase ventilation
13 - Gasket
q   replace if damaged
14 - Collar nut - 10 Nm
15 - Seal
q   replace if damaged
16 - Oil deflector
q   as of 08.97
17 - Sealing cone
18 - Injection lines
q   tighten to 25 Nm
q   remove with wrench for injection lines
q   If damaged, always replace wiring set completely
q   do not change bending form
19 - Vacuum pump
q   for brake servo unit
20 - 20 Nm
21 - Gasket
q   replace

   
Inspecting the cylinder head for distortion
Special tools and workshop equipment required
t  Feeler gauge
t  Knife-edge straightedge
Max. permissible distortion: 0.1 mm
  Note
It is not permissible to rework the cylinder heads of diesel engines.

Identification of the cylinder head gasket
t  Spare parts No. = -arrow 1-
t  Control code = -arrow 2- (ignore)
t  Bores = -arrow 3-
  Note
Differing thicknesses of cylinder head gaskets are inserted according to the piston projection for cylinder block → Chapter. If only the seal is replaced, a new seal must be reinstalled with the same identification.
