Removing and installing steering column switch
Removing and installing steering column switch
Removing:
–  Disconnect earth strap/cable of the battery.
–  Bring the steering wheel in its centre position, i.e. place the wheels into the straight position.
–  Move adjustable steering wheel fully down and pull out.
  Note
Always observe the safety precautions for airbag systems when working on components of the airbag system. → Body Work → Rep. Gr.69
   
–  Unhook springs, release the airbag unit -1- on left and right of the steering wheel from the rear with a screwdriver -2-.
–  Carefully remove the airbag unit.
–  Disconnect the electrical plug connector from the airbag unit and place down the airbag unit with the impact absorber to the top.

–  Unscrew the hexagon screw -1- and remove the steering wheel from the steering column.
  WARNING
Always replace hexagon screw.
Tightening torque: 75 Nm
  WARNING
Do not turn the coil spring out of its centre position when removing the steering wheel.

–  Loosen both Phillips head screws -1- and remove the handle of the steering wheel adjustment.
–  Then unscrew both Phillips head screws -3-.
–  Unscrew both fixing screws -2- with a thin and long cross-head screwdriver.
–  Remove the top and bottom part of the trim panel for the steering column switch.

–  Disconnect plug connection -1-.
–  Slacken the Allan screw (5 mm) -2- on the warm-type clamp until the steering column switch can be slightly moved.
–  Carefully disconnect the electrical plug connections from the steering column switch.
  WARNING
The coil spring remains on the steering column switch. Ensure that the coil spring does not get turned out of the centre position.
–  Remove the steering column switch from the steering column and place it to the side.
Installing:
  A48-0122
–  First of all fix the steering column switch -2- in such a way, using the Allen screw -3-, on the steering column that the specified distance -a- between the steering wheel -1- and the steering column switch -2- is maintained. -a- = 3 mm
–  Remove the steering wheel again and then carry out the installation in the same way in reverse order.
