Inspecting ceramic pencil type glow plugs
Inspecting ceramic pencil type glow plugs
Special tools and workshop equipment required
t  Handheld multimeter -V.A.G 1526 B-
–  Connect handheld multimeter -V.A.G 1526 B- for resistance measurement between contact and glow plug housing.
l  Specified value: less than 1 Ω
If the specified value is exceeded (greater than 1 Ω):
–  Remove the related ceramic pencil type glow plug and check it again for fracture of the pin.
  Note
If a pin is fractured, the fractured pieces must be removed from the engine before the 1st engine start, otherwise this will always lead to an engine damage (seizing of a piston). If necessary, remove the cylinder head.
–  Re-insert pulled out plug connections of the ceramic pencil type glow plugs.
–  Inspect the installed ceramic pencil type glow plugs in the self-diagnosis before the 1st engine start → Vehicle diagnosis, testing and information system VAS 5051.
   1. Interrogating and erasing fault memory of engine control unit. Do not start the engine!
   2. Performing self-diagnosis.
   3. Interrogate the fault memory on the engine control unit again. Do not start the engine!
  Note
If a fault memory entry regarding the ceramic pencil type glow plugs is stored, the engine must not be started!
–  Check el. wiring as well as plug connections of the ceramic pencil type glow plugs.
