Fuji Heavy Industries, Ltd., with the concurrence of Subaru of America, Inc. has determined that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in
some 1981 and 1982 Model Year Subaru passenger vehicles.
Only Manual transmission vehicles, equipped with a maintenance free battery, which were produced between April 1981 and January 1982 are affected.
The vehicles affected by this recall fall within the VIN range listed in the illustration.
The defect involves the electrical system of the vehicle and is a result of the front wiring harness rubbing against the battery hold down rod.
Vehicles exhibiting this condition may develop a short in the electrical system and if left unattended, overheating of the wiring harness could occur
which could result in a fire in the engine compartment.
Therefore, it is necessary to recall some 1981 and 1982 vehicles to inspect the wiring harness, tape/repair or replace as necessary and to install protective
covers on the wiring harness and the battery hold down rod.
